If I recall, the later engines don't have those access panels. I believe that was something that stopped in early '99. IIRC, the 2001+ white blocks I've worked on have not had those.
My 1999 does but its an early build. Not sure about my other 1999. No, not that one. No, not that one either. The fourth one..

That isn't so bad really, although you bought pistons etc.
Yeah. All in I'm around 3k. But that seems to be in keeping with the last couple of " typical " engines I've had rebuilt.
Frankly I was expecting a bit more, considering shops are charging 1k just for a PCV job. And with this market.

First questions about mysterious parts...
What are these 10 " star " bolts for ?
And does the gear just slip over the end of the crank shaft ? The gear seems to have an indexing mark on the inside of it, but I don't see any corresponding mark on the shaft end. It does start to slip on about half way in one position. But since this seems to relate to TDC, I'm guessing it needs to be right.

Pretty sure the externals are the flywheel to torque converter bolts…

The hub only goes on one way, the crankshaft splines have an index which will match the hub

Those look more like flexplate to crank bolts. (The qty also jives). The converter to flexplate bolts are internal Torx and there are only 6 IIRC.

So for you logical types that might be following along; there are 10 bolts that I could not identify.
They were in the box of parts that the machine shop included with the old parts.
They hold the flexplate on to the crank.
Therefore the flexplate is still 130 miles away at the machine shop :x

Well, it’s better to find that out before engine installation

Why did you have the engine rebuilt? May I ask how did you justify the cost?

I'm on the schedule to get $1000 of body work to repair a small dent in my quarter panel. I shouldn't be talking about justifying costs.

Yup, I was going to say those are the flywheel bolts before my cat sat on my keyboard and I got distracted
