IS 50 quid an hour the going rate ther?

It's easily twice that here

£50 is a very expensive one. Sadly the one within biking distance of me happens to be very expensive. Most independents are £30-40 per hour, with smaller ones oop noorth being more like £25-30.

Cookeh has a good point! If a local repair shop is delivered the parts, what do they charge for fixing it? Volvo, oh, probably around $150 CDN!!

Amazing. My cheap independent is now at 70 GBP per hour and a dealer is easily 120 GBP an hour.

Not to discredit mechanics but that's extortionate pricing. The Irish in me would be sobbing into my stout if I had to pay that. I guess it pays to be willing to get stuck in over there, even more so considering the average salary is comparable between our two nations*.

I think I'm paying $150 per hour at my dealership. I haven't seen $120 a hour in at least 20 years if not more. June

Without getting too political we are seeing the difference between societies where health care and retirements are socialized.

Some insight in the Dutch prices. My local Volvo dealer asks 65 euros per hour, that's somewhere around 70 dollars I guess. I also go to a local DIY-garage where I can rent tools, a bridge, et cetera, even the help of another mechanic for 40 euros per hour (45 dollars?).

This is another area where this is rarely found here, and my guess is that liability is the hard part here.
