Have been working at getting the V70 engine back together for the last 2 days. Took my time with the rods and bearings install, hopefully I did everything right

Got to bolt the cam cover back on and my intake cam doesnt spin at all  Took it apart, cleaned everything, used an even larger amount of assembly lube: still stuck

Gonna need a few days to recover from tightening those 40 bolts, in a pattern, in multiple steps, twice in a hot garage

Probably wont have this thing complete by the end of the week, priority is finding the driveline vibration on the 940 after it grenaded a diff last week and a center bearing support 3 days ago

Abscate had a lot of challenges with his cam install on his T5 first time around. Can't recall the specifics. He had issues with the cams seizing on tightening.

The thrust bearing on the cams near cylinder 1 needs to have a giant gorp of grease or it will seize up. It’s hard steel on an aluminum head and it likes to stick

You don’t have to put on the sealer to test fitment and cam motion.

I did mine 8/9 times before I got it lubed right

I think I've only resealed a cam cover on one of these engines once, but I applied a liberal amount of Permatex red engine assembly lube. No problems with the cams seizing up.

Thanks I'll try that.

I'm using some Skandix assembly lube, it smells like very industrial BBQ flavor, making me hungry

bought a large cargobox for tools which come into contact with carcinogens. got tired of vacuuming to decontaminate my wagon constantly. 17 Cubic feet seems to be enough for everything i will need. will mount as far back as possible and report on mpg differences.

Technically it was my buddy working on his 00 V70 NA. He called me to say a check-light had come on and a P0225 and a P01670 code came up on his OBDII scanner. Car was running badly.

P0225 is the ETM. So he pulled the ETM to swap it for a spare used one he had but it ran worse. I asked him if he had the right ETM for his car. He did not realise there was any differences. By luck, as they rarely are any 99-00 P80 NA's coming into the junkyards, I had pulled one from a 00 V70 NA a year ago even though it was not a rebuilt unit. I had taken it as a long shot for 50% sale price so no big deal if it was bad. I had no way to test it but cleaned and stored it in a vacuum sealed bag with desiccant.

I gave that to him to try as I knew it should match his car but it had a 'white line' warranty.

He said the car fired right up and ran great again. Whew!! Lucky find I guess. Hopefully it lasts!!!!

I will clean the old one up as it is somewhat dirty and return it to him sealed as a back up. I am not convinced it is hard failed and it can at as a back up. I think it may have thrown a false code and he did not reset it by disconnecting the battery first.

The P01670 cleared with the battery reconnected and and so far has not returned.

Today he dropped off the yellow label unit he had tried to fit as well as the original which I will clean. The part number he had used was the same as 2 I have for LPT 99-00 4 speed autos. So no wonder his car ran worse on it!!

Blue Steel ('98 V70 base AT) recently had its coolant light come on after a two-hour drive with two of my kids in the car, but I found a Napa and topped it off.

The right side of the radiator appears to have a leak about one-quarter of the way down. I see replacements with oil cooler ports, but is that only for turbo models? Mine does not seem to have these.

FCP shows options of radiators without the engine oil cooler:

https://www.fcpeuro.com/Volvo-parts/V70 ... 8,797&v=83

I am not sure if engine oil coolers were only fitted to turbos, although turbos are all I have seen with them. There may be some markets where an engine oil cooler was fitted to even NA engines.

Either way, I guess in theory you could still use a radiator with the engine oil cooler as well as the trans cooler but it just not get used.
