And the best bit is the XC90 has no pretentions. X5 drivers are trying too hard to impress, and Q7 drivers simply look like gits.

We lost our beloved 2004 XC90 T6 and almost 2 years later I found a beautiful 2008 Volvo XC90 V8 in black.

I spent many hours searching the web and going in person to look at used 1stgen XC90's. We were considering the purchase of new or almost new XC90 or possibly an almost new XC60T6(we thought it was too small) We actually loved the 2017 XC60 T6 but we held out for what she really wanted and that was a 1stgen XC90 T6 or better yet a V8 model.

I am now on my second 1st gen. My 2010 got totaled unfortunately 2 weeks ago. I found a nice 2011 XC90! White with the tan interior. All the bells and whistles. Works and drives perfectly! Now to just get the XM radio working...

Well, the XC90 has done remarkably well, until today. After a long week of multiple trips over the Santa Cruz mountains and a San Francisco day over the weekend, it was time to drop our visitor at the airport. The car made it to the airport and then after the dropoff, it wouldn't go into gear. I tried manual mode and was able to get the car to 2nd & 3rd and then eventually just 3rd. I drove in 3rd all the 26 miles home over the mountains. The car made it but the "Transmission Service Urgent" light is on. I pulled a code P0732 on the ODBII.

It looks like the dreaded tranny issue has finally hit. Well, why I am posting this in a thread about loving our car? Well, it's got 178,991 miles on it now. In full disclosure, when I bought the car with 36,000 miles, the transmission had been replaced just before my purchase. So that means I got about 143K on the current transmission. That was a lot of family vacations and memories. If it was going to die, at least it was after all the Memorial Day weekend activities.

Now I am pondering whether to get another vehicle or repair the transmission. Does anyone know if there's a stronger "built-out" version of the transmission for this car? I think this has too many miles for a free Volvo "good faith" swap. What have others done?

It looks like it is time to "Retire" the car. I've got mixed feelings, but I can't justify the $8K estimates I am getting to replace the transmission. I'll looked to my other Volvo (V70 T5) to carry on the Swedish tradition in our family.

Visit a local LKQ yard and get quotes for a low mileage transmission, Song. You have to search online at the LKQ site, not from home, as the parts inventory there is different, better and cheaper.

10 hours to put it in , about $2500. Whole job, under 3k

Try a deep ATF fluid flush. It might just be unhappy with the fluid. Then again, you did say it is stuck in 3rd.

I guess I didn’t wrap this story. I ended up selling my car to a pick-n-pull for a few hundred bucks sine they would pick it up from the tranny shop. We have replaced the car with the most reliable brand the last few years running. So now, the only Swedish ride I have is our V70 wagon. It’s our main family car once again.

Bought my 2009n xc90 V-8 in 2018, third owner 107,000 just traded in the weekend before, about 80% purchased sight unseen.
Since then 134.917 miles later I've had to replace a cooler fan , The o ring on hose/ the power steering pump or reservoir 86 cent replacement versus the 300.00 for the pump, the tailgate apron. I've noticed light squeaking mornings on the passenger side wheel area which goes away once the car and air temperature go rise a little. I have been very very happy with my purchase and shout out to the technicians I've been fortunate enough to have service it and a 99 volvo c70 which I recently painfully let go .
I like the color, interior, performance, 4 port exhaust has a nice beefy rumble when idling. I hope Volvo continues to support manufacture of parts for it and many earlier years. When I was able to do basic maintenance I bought my parts from IPD so I've been luck in many ways not only with my xcbaby, salute and thank my Volvo technicians, Scott, Bob and Chris for years trustworthy service and reliability to match the reliability of both C70 and XC90
