Old, highly worn engines might have a ridge at the top of the top ring travel. If the ridge is significant, a ridge cutting tool is used to cut it down so the rings can come past the ridge and out the top.

Still have cylinder Cross hatch and no evidence if oil ring burning on this motor so I’ll be leaving bottom end alone.
Measured the top of block and she is as flat as a pancake, holding for machine shop.
Starter is out and at rebuild shop.

Always amazed that when cared for how well the engines stand up to wear. Glad it is warming up to manageable temps to allow progress. Here it is not so warm. Up North of Alberta it is -44C without wind-chill!! With wind-chill in the -55 to -60C range. Here in Calgary it is a tropical -35C with wind-chill and to stay this way until next week.

Thanks foggydogg and hoping you are doing well. The garage is what I always promised myself when I retired and especially now the old joints aren't too happy in the cold!
Actually today was cold but with a clear blue sky so wan't too bad.
I'm hoping over on the eastern shores it is much more balmy and allows play to continue on your cars. Abscate is now a man on a mission. Elizabeth will hopefully soon be back in the land of the living!

Additional 2 were about to burn?
I'll be in a head rebuilt job soon because of bad valve stem seals(still original).
Will need to check compression first to be sure the engine is in good shape or is that not necessary?
All info you can provide is welcome.
