I see. So the VVT can be a bit touchy after sitting for 6 months? If a cam seal suddenly blew out, would that make an audible noise?

I guess if there was some extreme crankcase pressure. But you'd probably see a puddle of oil if that happened.

Ok I figured out the mystery *pop* from the maiden voyage. The intake from the turbo blew off at the throttle body. This morning I drove the xc90 on a Sunday morning donut run and she was running loud with sluggish power. I thought I was hearing an exhaust leak.
I can't believe it drove as well as it did. After I got home she would just stall at every startup.

Also gave the MAF its first cleaning in 18 years. Now I'm currently installing one of the retrofit android tablets.

Yep, that'll do it! I've had that happen, it will kill power pretty quick. I'm surprised it took that long to want to stall.

Elizabeth test drive , lumpy and crappy. Found loose ground on 1/2 coil pack

Those turbo induction clamps Volvo uses are , special, with a spring band in the middle. Designed for purpose, I bet.

With the pending 98 V70 suspension refresh on the near horizon, I have to get my main workbench cleared to work on the parts.

First was tackling the pair of rusty but good front P80 brake calipers and big brake caliper brackets they were mounted to.

What amazed me was the condition of the aftermarket (awful) slider pins. How/if these brakes worked amazed me!!

Even after cleaning it is not worth keeping due to the surface damage. This will in turn damage the slider boots.

I still have a bunch of used OE pins that are in way better condition than these. The other issue I did not show is the damage to the 7mm hex heads. I have received these on reman'd calipers that were so bad I was unable to undo then from new without then rounding!

Took a scope to my two spare engines for the 98 v70. Both engines clearly show all the cross hatching however there are some singular scratches on the wall. None of the scratches look that deep on the scope however it does show a bit of wear. I am thinking that both perspective engines would need a valve stem seal job.

If the cross hatching is clear across all walls of the cylinder then would a handful of sidewall marks be something to be worried about?

The bottom end of these engines are extremely tough. I remember one ad said Volvo used high carbon steel in the block, the only other maker doing this was Rolls Royce , it claimed.

I would assume the bottom end is fine with 99.3% certainty

Block/cylinder failures on these are extremely rare. The only time I've passed on reusing block was when it had sat with water in the cylinders from a serious head gasket failure, and had insane rust buildup on the liners.
