Filled up the gas tank, and checked the oil on the 850. Oil is low, and the service light just started coming on a day or two ago. I'm surprised the service light came on, as it's low miles since the last change, but maybe time factors in it too.

So, so, so, sorry abscate! And thankful for the Volvo armor. These cars are far from inanimate objects, which is why many bestow them with names. I pat mine frequently and promise her continued good care in the hope that she’d care for me as Shagg cared for you. Hope the “fleet” offers some support and comfort.

Oil service light is time based. Not too clever, but just a basic reminder every 6 months.

You can change the service light interval and reset it using the "850 OBD-II" app made by xiaotec, and a compatible ELM327 OBD-II reader.

Spent the last 2 days working on my friends 98 V70 NA. Strut/shock renewal and brake service were the main targets. My buddy the Volvo mechanic was called in to do the struts as he has a nice spring compressor and an interesting way to do the struts.
He uses removes the 2 lower strut bolts and supports the hub assembly, removed the upper swaybar link and then works the strut loose. Finally using an impact gun he undoes the main nut on the top of the strut and the strut drops out leaving the bearing plate and top mount in place so it does not get moved!
Really quick! Also minimise's the chance of the top plate not getting moved in position.
What we found was the RH front strut was dead. Pushing the strut piston down had nearly no resistance, and once compressed, it did not rebound at all! The spring seat was also destroyed, an was almost completely separated. The swatybar end link was also bad on that side at one end. Gus said this is mostly caused by useless mechanics using air guns or impacts without using a wrench to prevent the threaded section turning. The high speed melts the plastic cup in the ball socket and the end link is toast as this was.
LHS was not as bad. A little life left in the strut but not much. Spring seat was also failing. Anti-sway bas is looking worn but still has plenty of life left.
New Bilstein B4's, Sachs spring seat, Lesforjors springs and Sachs bump stops fitted. Strut bearings were good, but we had to replace both swaybar end links with good used ones from the stash!
Rear springs are in amazing not rusted condition and considered good to stay so my spare Lesforjors from my old car can go in the stash for now.
The rear struts were worn but still have life left so will be kept for emergencies. Strut seats were also like new! New ones have gone into stash for PIF stock.
I then stripped and cleaned all the brakes which still have plenty of life left in them. With some Abscate advice on the anti-squeal shims on the rear all was done once the parking brakes were adjusted.
Replaced the broken auto gearshift knob/button, reset the service light. Tried to look for any leaks on the top of the fuel tank while the rear floor was out but was stymied by a metal cup/cap over the fuel pump that I could not remove.
Owner is thrilled with the car and it is now running great again and says it drives like new again! All the thanks you need!
Tried to pair and use 850 OBD2 and a Veepack bluetooth ELM327. Got is working but it seemed to hang up. Didn't have time to play around with it to try to figure it out. It will have to wait for the next -98 P80 turns up. There is a 97 850 GLT on the horizon.........!

Yes, I actually have that. I've used it to reset the light, but don't recall what the interval was. I haven't really explored that feature.

How many miles were on the struts? I had 110k miles on a pair that you could compress with a finger, and recently took off struts that seemed good except they were so rusty it wasn't worth rebuilding them on a car with ~160k miles.scot850 wrote: ↑24 Sep 2023, 19:44 Spent the last 2 days working on my friends 98 V70 NA. If you're talking about the "850 OBD" app, I recently started using it, and I found that sometimes between operations I needed to hit the "pause (disconnect)" button and then hit the "play (reconnect)" button and then when I initiated the next task it would start right away. I am just using some generic bluetooth ELM327.
I am amazed at what the app could do, I had setup VOL-FCR to read ABS codes, but I found it a bit limited. It was pretty cool sitting in the car and initiating an ABS pump test over OBD, I had thought those fancy features were limited to CANBUS cars.
I'm still looking for something that can program a keyless entry fob to a 98 besides calling shops across three states looking for someone with a working VST.
