Re: P80 Radio Head units, wiring and amp questions!

I have been thinking of fitting a Dolby unit to my 'R' for for a long time. I may have found a dash top with the speaker and a Dolby amp elsewhere. Anyone have any idea what the wiring looks like for the Dolby unit? I have an SC-900 and also the original SC-901 head units (and several others). The dash top does not have the connecting harness. I know the amp has a long harness coming out of it but have no idea if that is the one to connect to the speaker.

There is a harness that comes with the Dolby amp but it must only fit between the Dobly amp and the head unit as it has many connectors and the wiring is very sort runs.

The wiring harness for the Dolby amp is of course NLA.

There is an option of a later C70 100W amp that mounted in the trunk side area but again no harness. Due to the space it takes up it would probably need to be fitted in the spare wheel well like the P2 version.

Again the harness is NLA.

Does anyone know how to connect any of this stuff if the cables are NLA, what would I need?

Ok, I believe I now know what the radio to Dolby speaker on the center of the dash should look like for the most part. It plugs into the
rear of the head unit where the 'green' socket is. Picture on this thread shows the rear of a head unit:

Part way down this shows a green plug with 2 wires coming out of it presumably to the center speaker. The plug looks like it has 5 small pins in the back of the head unit. Anyone any idea where to get this type of plug?

The other end has a white plug but no idea what it looks like?

I was going to post this in the radio section but it does not look like it has been visited much recently.

Hey, Neil -
It seems like a lot of people that harvest
SC-900/901's neglect to grab this cable.
Your best bet will probably be a junkyard.
Maybe throw up a request for this cable
in the classifieds here and over at
SwedeSpeed?

Problem I have here is that I have never seen a center Dolby speaker in any of our junkyards in over 10 years. We now seldom get any P80's at all. Currently there is a well picked over 00 S70 NA and 2 x 96 850's also well picked over and that is it locally. That green plug looks like it is the same as the one that plugs into the back of the amp under the passenger seat. The speaker end also looks like one of the connectors used in the center console lighting wiring but hard to say. Wires don't look anything special although they may be wrapped in shielding of some sort.

What is weird from your picture above is that it looks like there are 4? wires going into the green plug and only 2 into the white, but then there are 2 that look like they have been cut off. Should there be a 2nd connector on that?

What I am trying to find is somewhere I could buy the connectors and make up that wire for myself and any others that may need it as well.

Ha, while tidying up my last haul from PnP junkyard today, I found some wiring I had cut for test purposes. 2 of those are those green connectors that go into the radio head unit! So provided they have all the correct connectors internally then I may be able to make up 2 Dolby wire cables! All I need to do now is get a close up of the speaker end cable connector and to see if the wiring is shielded and then I can make up the cables!

BEJinFbk, if you still have that cable can you do the honors please of a picture of the speaker end of he cable? Many thanks!

Now just have to get the rest of the stuff to go with the wire!! Dash top and Dolby amp.

These are the 'green' connectors end at the head unit:

Connector at radio end (1)

Connector at radio end (2)

Connector on rear of SC-901 unit

So this is the cable end I have found I have a couple of.

Now need the other end identified as well as the cable/number of wires/length and if they are shielded!

Sorry to say that I only have the picture.
That was a cable for sale some years ago.
FWIW, being a speaker lead, shielding is
not required.

On the Green connector - Starting with pin 1 at top:

Pin 1 - "Radio Code" - Black - Direct to ground for Cabriolet
Pin 2 - "Radio Code" - Black - Direct to ground for Coupe
Pin 3 - Shows as a Brown/Pink in Cabriolet only (to roof module?)
Pin 4 - Center Speaker (-)
Pin 5 - Center Speaker (+)

IIRC, grounding either pin 1 or 2 tells the radio if
it's living is a coupe or a convertible to set the EQ.
I suspect pin 3 serves a similar function telling
the radio if the roof is up or down and adjusts
the EQ accordingly.

I currently have a V70 and a C70 coupe with Dolby and the center speaker, when I have some time I can look at the cables on them.

browsing through my photos on the V70, it seems to have only two wires on both ends

A friend of mine in Germany says the white connector is Part number 968376 which is still available. He said he bought a bunch of both connectors years ago for a project and will dig some out for me. At least worst case the withe connector is only about $2 CDN each! Thanks for confirming the only 2 wires needed. Can you please take a close up picture of each end of the connectors so I can figure out which pins are connected? Really appreciate your help!

Finally, if you could estimate the length of the wires? I will make them longer so if you can estimate on the long side!
