ETS light

Post by Joshuaevers12 »

My ETS light came on last night. I used my obd 2 reader on it today and no codes came up. I haven’t noticed any difference in how it drives and don’t really know what the ETS light is for. How severe is this? My car is a 2000 Volvo SE GLE with 180k+ miles.

You won't get normal codes with the ETS light. It's indicating a fault in your electronic throttle body. The 1999-2002 cars have a throttle body that is flawed by design and will fail eventually. It's likely you're seeing the first indications of that. With 180K on your car, I'm assuming you haven't had the service or replacement done yet.

You can replace it with a used one, but even Volvo's replacements fail. The only real permanent fix is to replace it with a redesigned aftermarket, like from XeMODeX.

You can keep riding it out on your current one, and try cleaning it (Volvo's solution for a long time) but eventually you'll likely get rough-running, stalling, and weird power surges at random.

I replaced mine with one from above link in 2010 and it's still going strong 12 years and 150K+ miles later.

23 years/180,000 miles…not too bad!

You usually get 5-10k more miles before the ETM unit will go into “ limp” or just get you home mode

The late model Volvo module sells on eBay used for about $150-200

Details are in a thread in the ETM forum below
