1998 V70 | Dire times with the transmission | Thoughts apperciated

Post by yanga001 »

Hi Everyone,

car developed an issue yesterday where the transmission shifted into neutral or tried to switch and did not catch a gear. There has been no bangs and recently i did a drain and fill and only had a one off issue a month ago where it said gear ratio issues from 3 to 4.

At this time, after a bit of research i am unsure if this is just a PNP issue or not.

Every time it has done it, i have shifted into neutral and then drive and it sorted it out after 1-5 cycles of that. The engine catches the gear and goes.

I can say it happens mostly when driving uphill and it feels like the car is losing out on catching the gears.

I will check codes with VOLFCR to get the full tranny code list, see if anything is obvious however i need a car for work, and i know this engine is bullet proof and a good amount of cash has been put in to keep it running. For the last month it has been perfect.

OPTIONS:
i have a crashed one with a pretty good transmission, not perfect, and a parts car which had a failed tranny computer but was good after swapping the computer. My vehicle is at 360k km on the original tranny i believe.

I know my PNP needs service as i lost the tail lights almost two years ago. The niave part of me says replace that and go, the real part of me is preparing for the transmission to be dead.

Looking for input on this as used car prices are a bit higher then i would like and i would go for a new one but no stock on what would be preferred.

Update: coolant had a bit of an oily film and I might have had a radiator fail from a pinhole leak. The transmission felt like it didn’t have the viscosity

Update: drained the fluid and it was watery like coolant. I believe the radiator failed and dumped coolant into the tranny. Will drain and fill both. No metal bits or wear on the cap so I caught it early. Tonight will be late while I grab a radiator. O2 sensor, pnp switch, and start a tractor

Doesn't everyone get to go out and start a tractor after a hard days spannering??! I wish I could!

I was really tempted a couple of years ago to buy a cheap but running 70's Volvo farm tractor, but I had not got my garage built then and so had no where to store it. Regret missing that one!

On your problem hopefully the tranny has not been damaged and the issue was the oil cooler has failed in the radiator. I know you will flush the tranny with fresh fluid, but maybe if it runs ok, reflush again soon in case any coolant is still in the system. When you drain it you only get about 3.5 liters of 6? (can't recall the full amount).

I am hoping too. I didn’t see any buildups on the magnet and the fluid was darker red but not black so I believe it was starting to go bad. Coolant looks good but both will be flushed regardless. Hoping I am not there until morning working on this

When you get a chance and can take a break from all the work on the car, let us know how old the radiator was that failed and what brand it was.
Also curious to know what brand of new radiator you installed please.

Putting up an update.

I believe i had burned fluid from a low level early on. Spoke to a coworker and he described the exact behaviour with old fords when the fluid starts to go. I am guessing that at a low level, it burned the fluid more rapidly, and the drain from radiator and the transmission allowed for it to work properly.

I will monitor it and post my results in about a week. I have not had an issue in the last 50-60 km but i have a site tomorrow and believe that will be the real test. Fingers crossed!
