I just recently purchased the car (149,000 miles) and am assuming this is a transmission problem. It has the automatic trans. with manual shifting option. Just starting out driving after setting overnight the first shift from 2 to 3 does not happen untill 3000rpm, all other shifts occur around 2100 rpm. I use light throttle just starting out. After the first couple of times it settles down and shifts like the others. Also when going 40 mph in 5th gear on level ground the engine speeds up 300 rpm and then down - it cycles like this with out shifting from 5th untill I get the speed up into the higher forties and then acts normal at higher speeds. Also when going in the low 40s mph in 5th gear and then applying light throttle the rpms jump (from 1500 to 2200rpm) with out the car speed changing or the transmission shifting. The trans fluid was last changed at 128,000 miles. I just recently had all trans and engine codes updated by the local dealer. They did not find any trans. error codes. Other auto trans car I have had have not acted this way. Do I have a problem?
Thank you
Transmission? 2002 V70 T5

There is a free ETM software upgrade for your car that should help your shift flares and strange/wandering/surging rpm's. Also, your car is adaptive. You really ought to disconnect the battery for several minutes so the computer can start over with you and learn YOUR driving habits rather than continue with the last owner's.

Sorry to tell ya but your tranny is probably toast.
Wasn't checked out before purchase?
No warranty?

Jim, he said he had the "codes" updated and no problems found...to me this means he had them read. I don't know, maybe he had the ETM upgrade, but I didn't read it that way.

THAT is exactly what he said which translates to:
" I have any and all new software the car takes".
At 140K miles, I really think he's going to need a transmission on this one

Yeah, at those miles, and still having trouble, I'd say you're right.JRL wrote:At 140K miles, I really think he's going to need a transmission on this one

Thank you for the quick replies. The dealer performed the ECM and TCM software upgrades on the car with no change to the running problems. The question now is getting the dealer to admit the transmission is going bad as I have only a year warranty from The Penn Warranty Corporation (hope they are good) that covers the transmission. Penn warranty may fight you a bit but they WILL pay. They may want to find you a used tranny (they have this right).Kelvin wrote:Thank you for the quick replies. Penn Warranty warrants car with up to 150K miles, they are about the only company that will.
They may claim that it was a prior condition (and it probably was
WHATEVER YOU SAY DO NOT TELL THEM IT WAS THIS WAY FROM THE DAY YOU BOUGHT IT AS THEY WILL DENY IT. YOU TELL THEM IT JUST HAPPENED.
YOUR BEST SENARIO (IF YOU CAN) WOULD BE TO WAIT FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS, TRUST ME ON THIS
You may want to have the service manager point out to them that most USED 01 trannies may yield the same result.
Also they pay up to and only $65.00 and hour so you may have to work it out with whoever is doing the tranny
I'm a dealer, if you would like to know about and how to handle Penn Warranty before you submit a claim, IM me
