2007 XC70. Suddenly without warning, the ignition switch appears to be jammed or something? I can insert the key but can't turn it past position 1, it's somehow jammed or stuck on something. This happens both with the fob with the flip-out key and the backup no-flip "valet key". I can't press the brake pedal or move the transmission out of park either. Both the fob and the car have a working battery- I can lock and unlock the doors from the fob as well as turn the lights on, nothing acts weird there or seems dim. I was just driving the car a couple days ago and there was no indication anything was amiss.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm kinda stuck here- it's in a garage and without being able to at least get it into neutral it can't even be towed out to a shop to be fixed.
Help! Ignition switch jammed?

I had two lock cylinders go this summer. You have to replace the piece wrapped around the steering wheel , after drilling off security screws
It isn’t cheap, like $350-500

A recovery service can deal with a car in park with small wheel Dollys to get it up on the flatbed

Adding this video to the thread in case this ever happens to me, worth 5min of time to avoid a huge tow bill. Good comment section too with other tips. No way I’m spending $400 on a lock cylinder.Good Junkyard item ?
Adding T-15 driver and flathead driver to my long list of emergency items to have in these cars so that I don’t get stranded. Wonder how wife would like having to start a car with a screwdriver

Oh thank you so much, that looks far simpler and cheaper than dragging out the car on dollies. This video was for an earlier gen, before I try to rip apart my steering column do you happen to know if it still applies to the P2 gen?

Many comments referring to 2001+ vehicles. The photo in the video looks like an 01 v70, maybe just bad video labelling. When he disassembles our cars look exactly the same with the antenna ring etc. should work fine. Do the hammer tap trick in the #1 comment too. It’s 3 screws. No big job here. Anyone can do it. Let us know! I hope it works.
Deep in the comments someone mentions a xc70 that wont shift from park. You also need to bypass the gear shifting linkage too perhaps.

If the mechanism is like the P80s, you can drill/demel out the cadmium plated steel square on the bottom of the mechanism after removing the plastic cladding around the bottom of the steering column. Once the plate is out there is a spring above it and a small broken bit of the ignition mechanism that is jamming things up. Once that is out, the ignition will turn again. Remove the steering lock cable to keep it from binding things up in there again. No need to replace the drilled out steel bit or the spring.
Zero dollar fix, the only downside is no steering lock, but I wasn't worried about anybody stealing my 2000 V70 with 300K+ km on it...
