Intercooler weep and wet turbo repair parts list needed

Post by FireFox31 »

My 1998 V70 T5M has some oil buildup on the intercooler and the turbo. Please help me quickly identify which parts I might need to replace so I can purchase them during the Cyber Monday sale today.

I will do a PCV glove test tomorrow morning. Would a failing PCV require this FCP turbo PCV kit including the expensive crankcase vent hose 9471644? On my 2000 NA, that hose seemed clean, though it's got coolant heating unlike 1998 it and it's less complicated than turbo.

I'm guided by this great thread about oil in the intercooler hose. The lower intercooler hose is caked with oil and its clamps are rusty. Should I replace that hose, part 6842167? Are any parts needed to disassemble and clean the intercooler?

The turbo itself has fresh wetness near the heater core lines through the firewall. I've attached a picture from underneath. Which parts look like they should be replaced?

Thanks for your help as I work with a turbo system for the first time.

I'll try to give some input:
If it is the first time the pcv is being done then I would replace everything. Even if it still working it will be brittle. You could also use other oil&heat resistant hoses, there were some threads on upgrading the pcv lines for handling increased blowby of older engines. Do not forget to get a new intake gasket if you do this.

I actually do not see a clamp on the Intercooler hose bottom? Maybe the pic is tricking me...
You would need to clean the Intercooler and inspect the hose to see if it is needed. The IC does have a weep hole where the oil might be from.
If you want to keep the car reliable I would just replace things that are known weak points. Most rubber hoses are suspect on cars this old. Also check your heater hoses by the firewall, these are known to fail. They might look fine, but if they feel crunchy I'd replace them.

As for the Turbo, mine is always leaking a bit of oil, I think that is mostly normal? Your Oil lines though are extremely rusty... :o

As hausmesister says, there are varying degrees of blowby from the oil seal in the turbo, which can show at the hoses and intercooler.

I would replace all cooling group hoses on that but the turbo snd jntercooler seep look like standard “ clean , wipe , refresh clamps “ job to me. No other issues.

Oil residue in the pipes and turbo are normal and need wiping out every 25000-50000 miles or so

It’s even more likely , when the crankcase is overfilled a bit

You will want to soak the daylights out of all those corroded bolts and connections.

If you have that much oil coming out the weep hole, you might want to consider removing the intercooler and having it flushed to clean all the pipework in it. Otherwise in cold weather it may freeze internally with condensation clogging the remaining spaces!

Over-filled on oil will not help, not would a blocked PCV.

I thought the same.

Honestly, I'd pressure wash and clean everything up, and then see what comes back. Engines build up grime over time, and who knows what a previous owner let leak, spilled, or drove through.

There is a clamp still there but boy is it rusty! You can see the 'tongue' at the lowest point if you look carefully. The hoses look really tired though!

Nothing under our old cars is bright as a shiny new penny; compared to what units in my fleet look like, you don't have any big issues.
Might be easiest - and safer - on clamps that crusty to just cut them off, especially if you're replacing the hose anyway. Trying to force old screw clamps to loosen through the muck of ages puts a lot of pressure on the attachment point.
It would be best to have all the PVC parts in hand when you start; no surprises that way. It will likely be a once in a lifetime job anyway, so replace everything.
No URO anything. Ever.

Should I replace the intercooler rubber hoses and clamps shown in the linked diagram? How can I tell if they should be replaced? Are they a long-term wear items like the cooling and PCV hoses?

Which hoses are you referring to and what makes them look tired? The pictured lower intercooler hose is coated with oil so I'm not sure how it looks underneath. The A/C line below it, specifically the rubber/metal union, is the worst thing I've found, but I'll tackle that later.
