Does The CEL Sometimes Reset Itself?

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

Yesterday i put some new plugs in the car and i when i started it up i remembered i got a 'confirmed' trouble code that turned the CEL on. It was for the misfire of cylinder #3.

What i was wondering is, if the misfire goes away, will the trouble code go away on it's own or do i really have to reset all the monitors again?
I hate to have to reset them because it takes years to get the monitors ready on this friggin car :-)

I noticed it did reset it self one time when it stalled out a long time ago (maybe 5 years back). It was rainy out and the car stalled an i was lucky to be able to start it up again and pull onto a side street and let it run for a few seconds until the started to run smooth again. It reset itself almost immediately and i would guess it was for a misfire, but i doubt it had time to 'confirm' the problem so maybe that is how it was able to reset itself but i really dont know what was different then.
Now it does not reset even after idling for 15 minutes all warmed up and pulling forward and backwards.

Think it will reset itself when the problem surely went away (no more misfire)?
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

It takes something like 40 drive cycles to clear a misfire code, but it will clear itself eventually. Weeks, maybe months of driving for your low duty cycle

Oh ok, well i 'think' it went out but then came back on, but cant be sure of that yet maybe it was rechecking or something or just delays the turn on from cold start.
Thanks again Steve.
