2015 v60 power steering issue please chime in

Post by Lostriverwagon »

I wil describe my problem s briefly as possible:

I have a 2015 Volvo v60 platinum with a 2.5 T5. I have endured a power steering fluid leak for about 18 months. It was leaking out of both ends of the steerig rack. I was quoted anywhere from $1800 up to 5000 to have the steering rack replaced. I decided to do it myself.

I sourced a used steering rack from eBay and I was able to remove the old one by lowering the subframe and supporting the engine. The new rack went in easily and I reconnected it. Note: the type of steering rack in my car does not have any electrical connections just 2 hydraulic connections to the steering lines. They are a non threaded type of connection with. plate that compresses them into the rack.

The research I did said to lock the steering wheel on place before disconnecting fro the rack which I did. There may have been a little bit of movement but not much.

After installing the new part I am seeing several error messages. They include:

Service power steering system
DSTC system disconnected
Service DSTC system
City Safety disconnected.

What have I done? What must I do to fix this? What I have seen in the forums leads me to believe that I must initialize/calibrate the SAS sensor or replace it. I don’t understand how this is possible since there was little to no movement of the steering column. I ordered a icarsoft vol v3.0 for Volvo/Saab diagnostic tool which purports to enable the user to calibrate the SAS system to clear the city safety/DSTC code. I chose this over a VIDA/DICE setup in the hope that it would be easier to use. Is this going to work?

Also, why the ‘service power steering system’ alarm? I bled the new rack as recommended after installing it. How does the car even know it was replaced? Is there an electrical connection in there somewhere that was unplugged?

The car seems to be driving ok. I know I need to get it in for a 4 wheel alignment. I just want to clear these alarm before I do this. I feel like taking it to a dealer at this point would be a failure on my part and since I live in a rural area and I am at least 150 miles from anywhere that I can take the car it will be very inconvenient. Lastly, is the car ok to drive with these alarms? It’s not leaking anymore and the steering seems ok. But I’m not sure if I’m doing damage by continuing to drive it.

If anyone has any ideas about this please chime in. I have searched the forums for a problem like this and although there are a few out there that are similar I just want to know that I am on the right track with the diagnostic tool and whether or not it will help me to resolve this issue.
