2015.5? V60 Cross Country brakes replacement

Post by scot850 »

My neighbor has asked if I could swap his front and rear brakes on his 2015.5 (Not sure of the relevance of the .5) V60 Cross County. It is a special order car in unique (I understand) color and Polestar engine upgrades. I was looking at the replacement parts and was staggered at the cost. A mere $750/ea CDN for the front rotors and several $XXX's for the pads. Rears looked a more reasonable price.

The issues I have are that apparently the original owner 'down sized' the brakes so he could fit smaller rims for our winters. So I understand they are the smallest option around 300mm.

The car also has the electronic parking brakes.

Now I have not worked on any newer Volvos than P2 XC70's and S60's so need some help/advice.

I have done the Youtube on the front brake swap and other than that stupid spring design holding the pads in (guaranteed to be rusted in our winters and impossible to remove), they don't look any different to any FWD/AWD for maybe 30 years. Are there any issues to be aware of or warnings? My worry is they rotors are as advised as I saw 3 options in the Volvo parts listings on the front.

It is the rears I am most concerned about. I have never worked on rear brakes with electronic parking calipers. I can't find a YouTube on it but the closest I can find is the P3 XC70. Hopefully this is close enough.

Assuming it is, I looked up on my old Vida/Dice the Vin# but it does not recognize it. I'm therefore assuming the version I have is of no use for this car. I think you can wind the parking brake motor back in with newer versions but I have no access to that.

So if the P3 XC70 video I saw was similar, you have to remove the motor and then the cover to access a T40? socket and wind the motor back in, then compress the piston with something like a large G-clamp to be able to fit new pads.

If anyone has done this, should I get them to order the new 'O' ring and bolt kit for the motor?

I have read somewhere that it was suggested you can wind the motor back in using a 9V battery and jumper wires to the brake motor. If this is the case, any idea which connector the + and - go to? This would be easier and not need to remove and open the motor.

Final issue is the torque settings for the caliper bracket bolts, the caliper bolts and the motor bolts assuming I end up having to remove that. Can anyone advise?

I do have an Autel 802 code reader. Does anyone know if that can diagnose the brakes and wind the parking brake motor back?

Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to offer my help and end up getting stuck on this. I have worked on my cars (mostly Volvos) for over 45 years and as a retired mechanical engineer I am fairly confident on tackling stuff I have not seen before, but nothing more embarrassing than offering and then not being able to get the car back on the road!

Many thanks,

Neil.

I'll answer my own questions here on torque values:

Hope this is of help to others.
