Anti-sway bars U bracket for a 1997 850

Post by Elpigo »

Hi to everyone,
I'd like to change the bushings of the sway-bar of my 1997 850, Problem is the bushings are vulcanized on the bar for the 1997 model and they can't be changed, at least from what is said. I saw on some sites guys that have changed these so I'm wondering someone would have U brackets to replace those in place and that will be scraped when taken out and also, is it possible to find replacement parts with jobbers enterprises (Moog, Dorman, etc.) to install instead of OE material. I did a little research on Amazon and they offer lots of bushings seemingly universal and that could possibly fit on my 850. Anybody has any experience with universal parts fitting Volvo 850?

Does anybody has an idea of solution practical and not too expensive? If someone has an old Volvo and wants to get rid of his U brackets for theses bushings, let me know, I'd take them. I've already got the bushings, the bolts and the nuts, I'm just missing the U brackets.

Thanks

Polys have been around for sometime. As far back as our family's 83 VW GTI that we purchased new. I replaced the OE with red Polys back then. Had I known I was going to be a car enthusiast I would have kept that car.. They can and do come with new brackets. Just have to do some research to see who has them.

A lot of the AM poly bushings come with brackets that will work. At least the ones I've used have.

A couple things on using the poly bushings.

1. The bar is lo longer held centered on the subframe (by the vulcanized bushings) and it can shift side to side. This can cause rattles and also prematurely wear out the poly bushings. I've used some split clamps on the outboard side of bushings to keep things in place.
The IPD bars come with that welded on stop for just this purpose.

2. It is kind of a pain to remove/swap unless the subframe is dropped, at least a bit. I usually save front SB installs until I'm already dropping the SF for something.

3. The stock bushings almost always look like crap, but are just fine (for the most part), so just swapping bushings, just to swap them, isn't really worth it, unless the stockers are in pieces.

If you want a bigger stock sway bar, the 99-00 XC70's have some of the larger ones used. We have '00 XC70 21.5mm front bars on both of our cars. ( Identified with yellow/blue paint marks from the factory)

As the guys have said, using bushes without having a stop like on the IPD's are a waste of time and money. Your original lasted 25 years, try checking the prices at the online Volvo dealers in Ontario for a price. I had the IPD front and rear sway-bars on my 2000 R when I bought it. I eventually removed the front one as they said you had to re-grease it every 5000 miles. Fitted the OE one instead.

I bought some replacement bushes for my IPD bar from Energy Suspension and they came with the brackets and greasable bushes that had grease nipple on them. They had generic not sure if they have for a FWD 850. The 98- V/S 70's had 3 diameters of anti-sway bars. I think they were 20, 21 and 21,5mm strangely the larges was the V70 XC. 'R' had a 21mm and I think the T5 may have as well.

This is the first part # at Volvo of Toronto:

https://www.volvooftorontoparts.ca/p/Vo ... gJeifD_BwE

That is around $200 US without taxes.

There is also one on Ebay new which works out about the same with shipping:

Thanks scot850 for your nice advice. Got the bar from the ebay seller as it seemed to me the best option. Made the guy an offer that he accepted and got a fabulous deal for the OEM material. I'll also change the link kit on both sides.
