Alternative source wanted for wiring repair p/n 3523813 wire & 9144275 socket

Post by jreed »

Wondering if anybody has experience with sourcing the female barrel type connector and insulator for the locking two-pin connector that is used in several places on the 850 and other Volvos, including the input connector controlling the cooling fan relay

and is marked STD 7614.31.

It's a two pin connector with locking tab.

The photos above are from a couple of side turn signal indicator lamps that I got at the junkyard a long while back.

The individual wires are available from Volvo, part number 3523813 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... escription

And the shell is also available (though it looks good enough to reuse): part number 9144275

Looking for a modern, less expensive part that will work well and provide a sealed connection on the barrel and pin.

Realistically, how many times have you had to replace this part on your 25 year old car? Are there any other places that are equally as exposed that might need this swap?

There are trailer connectors that are water proof, but the issue you have is getting it to fit into the relay socket and seal in there.

If this or even a couple of places need the repair, use the OE parts and worry about it again in 25 years?

It's been quite a while, but around 2007,
I was able to source replacement contacts
and plug bodies from Volvo. I realize that
it may no be an option to get the parts,
but you may be able to get part numbers
from a good egg at a dealer parts counter.

If you get'em, please post'em!

Now I'm wondering if I have those old receipts...

Do the two pins stay on without the connector plastic body?
Maybe you can push them on then use silicone rubber to hold them and seal against moisture somewhat.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Thanks for the inputs. Appreciated! I pushed the pins back in place as you suggested, and I put some silicone RTV to help keep water out. I may go for the Volvo harness/wire repair -- as pointed out above the originals lasted a long time before disintegrating.
The Volvo version has a little ring on the end that is held by the connector shell to prevent back-out:

It's a little expensive -- wanted to see if anybody has gone down this road before and if there is an alternative source.

Just thinking out loud...can those be 3D printed?

Shouldn't take long to create a 3D model of it. Not sure about what materials to use though.

FWIW:

https://usparts.volvocars.com/p/42839258/9144275.html

The connectors look like basic female bullets.
Get the ID and you may find a usable alternative
on eBay, then just hit it with good old dual-wall
shrink tube. As long as they fit the relay pins well,
the connector body may not be required.

Or just spring for the OEM stuff if it's still available.
The cooling system does fall into the critical category.

Thanks again for the input and advice. I found a pair of Volvo harness repair wires and a connector shell set on FCP and ordered them. The set is for hooking up side turn indicator lights, and it contains the same parts (wires 3523813, shell 9144275 ) needed for the control connector on the cooling fan relay (relay p/n 9442933).

I installed the replacement harness yesterday... cut off the old pins, soldered the wires, applied adhesive lined heat shrink over the connections for protection. The new shell fit OK in the fan relay. The new shell has small clips on the sides that interfere slightly with the larger connectors on either side, but it can be maneuvered into position by inserting it at an angle. It locks OK on the relay.
Heat shrink on wires and out of the way, just before soldering the connections with good old 62/36/2 solder.

Soldering & heatshrinking completed, connector in place on fan relay. Little pins on either side stick out and make it hard to insert the connector directly.
