1989 240 Timing belt question

Post by Volvo_240_Atari_2600 »

I have a 1989 24o GL wagon.
I purchased it three years ago with 124k... Today it has 192k

The radiator shrowd has a metalic VOLVO label with date and mileage.

Mileage says 124,000
Date is 1-18 cant read if 04 or 05

Could it be that befor I purchased the car the previous owner changed the timing belt and that is way to ID date and mileage of replacement?

If so, I have driven almost 75k on it since and I did buy it late Feb 2004
When should I look at next possible replacement on the timing belt.

Thank you for your input guys!

Eric

The label you mention certainly seems to be the timing belt reminder. There should be a diagram of the timing belt on it.

240s up to 1990 change interval is 48,000 miles or 48 months whichever is first. 1991 onwards the interval went to 50,000 or 60 months.

Seems like you are due a timing belt, more so as you are not sure if the previous owner did the change.

Hello Bill,

Thank you for the reply.
I guess I better have the timing belt done then.

Hate to be a pest, but did you get a chance to read my other question about the automatic transmission and the mysterious loss of fluid?

Is it a possible leak that only occurs when driving due to the pressure? As I said in the other thread... There is absolutely no marks or stains on the pavement of my driveway that would indicate where the leak would be coming from.

Your evaluation of the described situation and reply would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Eric
