1979 245 Won't shut off!

Post by h20man »

My 1979 B21f will not shut off. Turn it off, still running. Take out the key, still running. It's and M46, so i simply stall it out and then remove the battery cable.

When I re-attach the battery before starting it all the dash lights come on. It will start again just fine; it just won't turn off.

So far I have replaced the ignition switch and that did nothing. I also replaced the fuel pump relay, that did nothing. I check for a short and could not find one.

Any ideas what could be the issue? K-jet? Vacuum leak? I really have no idea.

Thanks -

Will

The problem is likely in the electrical system. Some wire is in contact that allows power to the run systems of fuel and ignition. Did you replace the mechanical or electrical portion of the ignition switch?
Try removing fuses individually to see if you can isolate the problem.

I replaced the electrical side with the pins. I tried pulling each fuse as well but could not isolate a particular circuit.

Does the mechanical side of the switch seem to have loose action? I just when through this problem on my 1977 Ford truck. In that case, the new switch with key fixed the problem.
Do you have an electric schematic for the car? Haynes manual has a schematic, but is is small for me to read.
