2000 S70 Rear Suspension Arm Clunking

Post by tjmartin317 »

Well, after 5 month's of ownership, I finally felt ready to rallycross my $500 Volvo. Did it before in my daily and popped a tire, which made me realize I needed a dedicated car for my day-to-day and a separate car for rallycross if I ever wanted to do it again.

For starters, I'm incredibly happy with how the car performed and handled. And I'm beyond surprised neither the engine nor transmission gave me any trouble at high RPM (I didn't shy away, the car was pushed, and at 330k miles I wasn't banking on that happening).

However, about halfway through the first heat of the day, major clunking occurred. My original (and possibly correct at the time) theory was the frame hitting the control arm, as the bump stops in the springs were removed... mainly because they weren't secured in the first place, just wobbling around like a bouncy ball in a jar. However, after the first heat was over, we took our lunch break and diagnosed the clunking:

That's a wiggly squiggly right there.

The whole arm will jostle the whole wheel up, down, in, and out. Going to call my volvo dealer tomorrow (or at some point) in an attempt to get a diagram... I'm hoping it's a bolt. The driver's side has three and the passenger's side has two, so maybe it was loose and finally had enough.

Another thing that broke is the exhaust pipe... which now tilts on an axis somewhere between pre catalytic converter and post muffler. The tip got ripped off. That's another issue I'll need to diag further, to see what all is holding in the exhaust now that the tailpipe isn't hung on a hanger anymore...

Linked below is a video of the best run we recorded and some more visuals on what's broken:

Again, making it home was all I really needed. I can get the car in the air and do further diagnosis. But I had an excellent time either way and can't wait to fix it. Going to get stiffer springs, new bump stops, and obviously fix the clunking/secure the exhaust pipe before doing another event... but I've scratched that itch.

Now go do something stupid!

Ooof. That rear link is badly broken. Time for some new parts. That bushing has snapped off the rear link.

I'm guessing I need that number 6... think that'll do the trick?

I'll be happy as long as you say I don't need the entire arm. Just from a diagram standpoint it doesn't look too terrible to replace. Kinda slides in there.

Yeah...

2 #6's and you might as well do the outer link bushings (#2) as well if you're going to be beating up on this thing like that.

There is a euro supplier that has a mono-ball/spherical bearing replacement set-up for those outer link bushings. Might be a good/more durable option. HERE
'97 854 T5 - Manual Swap/M4.4/COP/NA cams/P2R Brakes/16T/ chassis bracing/ XC70 nose swap
'97 855 GLT - Hers. RN swap/16T/COP/VVT/exhaust/302s/Flashed M4.4/ chassis bracing/ 2 kid seats
'78 GLE - Waiting in the wings. Future whiteblock/T5 swap.

The Others- '83 TBird turbo, '85 Mercury Marquis LTS (1 of 134), '86 LTD Wagon, '81 Granada GL, '76 Beetle, '93 F-150 I6

The OEM outers are softly-bushed for NVH and allow some manner of passive rear steer.

I wouldn't trust them to hold up for rally-cross usage. (Unless you really like changing them a lot)

The inners (like your broken one) are OK with OEM.

THESE are the replacement outers. (Just under $500 USD)

Well, considering they haven't died yet, I'll keep my outers till I need to replace them... because $500 is a hefty sum (and that's per bushing... so $1000... and I'd have to figure out how the payment even works cause currency exchange). We're doing this build bit by bit, so when those go, I'll get new ones, maybe upgraded depending on if I can shell out a grand... Then springs, then shocks, then whatever else I break (guess it's time for a performance exhaust ;) )

OEM inner bushings will be here friday and get installed saturday so that, at the very least, I can drive it again!

That price is for a pair. Still pricey, but not $1000 for a set.
