reason for damaged master window switch, 1995, 850 T5

Post by manuvolvo »

Dear all,

The driver's window of my Volvo 850 was not sliding properly due to a problem with the rubbers, so I took the car to a mechanic. He worked on it and said the problem was solved (after chainging the rubber by a new one), so I took the car, but after just one day the window would not slide. So, I took it back to the same mechanic. He then told me that the window switch was damaged. So, I had to look for that piece and it was replaced. At the moment, it seems to work well. He told me that the mechanical problem and the subsequent electric problem for the very same window were completely unrelated (so he would not be responsible for the latter), but that seems highly unlikely to me. So my questions for you are the following:

Could some mechanical issue preventing the window from moving freely damage the window master switch? How? Or could it damage the K/1 relay for the auto down?

Thanks a lot for your help and all the best!
Manuel

The honest answer is maybe. If the electric window motor was sticking it would draw more current and it could have burned the contacts in the original module to where it was close to failing. These modules do fail over time as the contacts wear out, especially on the driver's window switch. If you are handy or know someone that is, if you still have the original you can usually open them up (watch out there are loads of small springs) and have a look at the switch and it's contacts.

To say that the 2 issues are related from the mechanics position is very hard to say. I think they issues are connected but not necessarily from anything the mechanic did. So the 2 issues are not something the mechanic did in my opinion. It is just bad luck.
