Bumper and trim restore? What do I use?

Post by AlanS »

What is the newest, greatest product to bring my bumpers back to life? 2006 XC70, black bumpers and trim are tired and need an uplift. What do you all recommend?

Don’t use a heat gun or torch of any type, if that isn’t common knowledge.

Some options:
08 S602.5T/05 XC902.5T/02 S602.4T
08 C702.5T (sold)
05 S402.4i (RIP, timing belt failure)
The non-Swedes:
25 Mazda MX-5 / 17 Frontier Pro-4X / 17 Ford Focus
17 R1200GS / 15 Versys 1000 / 11 DR-Z400S / 07 R1200GSA

Wipe New. Will last for years. Initial glaze will turn matte in about a month. Don't forget to prep: wash, degrease.

I just did mine over the weekend, have been using Car Guys for 3 years. It works really well if you follow the instructions and apply it when the temps are above 70F or so. Lasts about 6-8 months and a bottle will do 2 applications unless your plastic is really shot.

Hey there
I've tried a lot of those plastic restore products before I got fed up because they just don't last.
Frustrated from failed attempts I painted them with flat black rust paint.
Truly the best results so far and super easy to pop out the bumper inserts and give a quick spray hang by one of the tabs in the sun to dry then re insert.
Cheap and effective solution.
Trim still looks like new 1 year later.
Cheers

You want to try something really cheap that you might already have in your kitchen?
Olive oil. Yes, it does work...for a while anyway.

I tried something (Back to Black?). It was a lot of time and trouble to apply and it only lasted a few months.
I decided I liked the dull, faded, vintage look better.

Power wash it good, degrease it good and let dry fully. Apply Wipe New, it will be like new for many years.

I did my Wipe New application in 2017. It is 2023 now and it still looks good.

It does not work on greasy or painted or otherwise contaminated surfaces.

Tried this on my 02 S60 trim and didn’t last at all. Followed instructions but just didn’t work in my application. They did get me a refund.

I use Kiwi black (Noir) liquid shoe polish with the foam applicator. It's a Johnson and Johnson product. Easy to apply and wipe off any excess. If your plastic trim is dried out, it will soak up a lot of polish, but is a good protectant. I think it looks good, and not very expensive.

Try it on your side (door) trim 1st and see what you think.
