2001 S80 trouble after XeMODeX Topic is solved

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2001 S80 trouble after XeMODeX

Post by NutbutterBandit »

So, first off, I love the forum and have searched through it many times for advice but never posted before. A few years back I purchased a 2001 S80 2.9 and wouldn't you know it, it quickly developed issues and would randomly go into limp mode, dash would light up, etc. After much banging of my head against a wall, I ended up replacing the ETM.

Poof! All my problems disappeared...for about 8000 miles. Then I started chasing a series of intermittent codes and replacing parts according to those codes. First 2 coils went bad so I replaced them. Then the brake pedal position sensor went bad so I replaced that. Then 2 more coil packs went bad but 1 of them was one I had already replaced so I went ahead and replaced them all. I got a code for the camshaft position sensor a couple times but that hasn't returned since I cleared it.

Lately the dash will periodically tell me that engine service is urgent, that performance is reduced, run rough and sometimes go into limp mode. Other times, it will tell me that engine service is required, that performance is reduced and it will run kinda rough when decelerating but otherwise drive normal. In either of these cases, it seems to always be preceded by a period of idling such as at a stop light rather than while in motion.

Currently throwing P1513 P1603 and P1608 codes

I would just be tickled pink if someone saw this and said "Oh yeah, that's a common issue caused by (insert inexpensive part) and it's easy to bolt off and bolt on" but honestly I'm a little bit expecting the ECU to be fried or something.
Thanks in advance!

I just want to say that coil packs are usually installed at the same time in the car, it's actually better to replace them all rather than one by one as they fail more or less within the same timeframe due to the same operating conditions across all of them.

Secondly, I've seen these generic codes never really explain it as well as what VIDA would, for instance the volvo specific ECM-4201 is shown as P0420, but P0420 says cat, whereas ECM-4201 says a bunch more things.

My advice is to read it properly and get the volvo specific codes.

Anyway, you are not the first person to say they have issues after Xemodex, perhaps they are not as competent as they once were.

Yeah, I was being a cheapskate the first time with the coils. The other day I replaced just the driver side front shock/strut assembly on my Toyota truck instead of both so obviously I'm a slow learner, lmao.

Just my experience with my 2002 T6 coils - the first one failed in 2016. The second one (different from the one in 2016) failed in 2022. So still running with 4 original coils in the engine, that has around 160K miles now.

On my 2001 V70 I replaced the ETM with XeModex in November 2016. In Summer 2016, I started having intermittent hot start problems and eventually got a replacement ETM from XeModex at no charge. This solved my problem.
This timing of your ETM purchase sounds similar to mine. Perhaps they had some quality problems at that time. I had to send mine in for evaluation.

I got in contact with xemodex but they're trying to pretend that I didn't purchase the ETM originally so they can wiggle out of the warranty. I do appreciate the advice though

I appreciate that but since I don't have any paperwork to prove it, I'm not sure that there's anything to be done.
