Starter Problem! 2001 S60 T5 5 Speed

Post by xoclipse06 »

Hello all!

Hoping folks here can give me some tips on what to do next. A few threads on here I’ve read thru but haven’t been able to fix my issue.

5Speed Manual, 2001 S60 T5

Issue: After sitting on cold mornings, an intermittent start. No Crank, No Start for 1-3 attempts.

Scenario: Alternator died perhaps 4 weeks ago. Replaced. Temperatures started dropping and the problem occurred.

Replaced Original starter! And apparently this wasn’t the problem!

Battery Meters 12.11 Off and 14.36 Running

Have not replaced starter relay YET, but relay clicks when 12 volts is sent to it when pulled off the car BUT only getting a reading of 11.7 on the starter relay terminal and the starter spade terminal.

I am solo so I am having a hard time metering the main power input to starter yet but could get that Information.

Took apart and used contact cleaner on ignition switch.

Wondering what the voltage should be at starter relay terminal.

Any other tips or questions you guys could ask to narrow this down would be great.

Battery is old, but voltage seems ok?

12.11 is too low. You need a new battery.

give it a charge, see if it starts quicker or go to autozone and let them load test it.
if it loads good then test resistance of main power cable.

Wow, I’m a lucky guy today.

Took the car up to Napa foolishly looking for a relay that they said was in stock. Not only was it not in stock, but upon leaving the car would not start. Tried reseating solenoid spade, connection. Nothing.
Went inside and bought a battery, same problem upon leaving.

Sat for 2 hours contemplating next move and towing possibilities when suddenly it starts.
Brutal day. Getting cold. Might buy XC60
