I just got a 99 S70 AWD with no history but in good shape, has only 117K mi which is remarkable for 24 yrs. When I start the engine while hot it throws P0014, the camshaft timing error. Other than that it runs OK.
I found suggestions to change oil (did it) and use an engine cleaner to get rid of the sludge, waiting a few K's miles for error to go away? Or is this something that should be addressed ASAP? Again, there seems to be no deterioration in performance at this point.
TIA

The 2 main things that usually show up for this error are:
1) The timing belt has been fitted incorrectly and may be 1-2 teeth off
or
2) The VVT solenoid is not operating correctly or has failed. Being a turbo 99 there should only be a VVT solenoid on the exhaust side up near the timing belt. They can get gummed up or leaking gaskets.
Others may chime in on this issue.
Worth waiting until you get the oil cleaner through the system and run for what ever time they suggest and then use some good quality oil and new filter and see what happens.

Thanks Scot for your answer. Quick question: would I be abl e(with limited mechanical abilities) to DIY replace the VVT valve myself? Should I even try that before waiting for the engine cleaner to work its magic? TIA

This shows you how to swap the valve and solenoid. It is on a 2000 V40, but it is the same process. The one exception is that in some cases the solenoid and valve could be separated and individually swapped. On all the ones I have seen on the 5 cylinder motors they are bonded together so you have to swap the total entity.
