first time ever today, it didn't fire up smoothly. stumbling, long crank
i tried a few starts and after 3 poor starts it failed to fire up at all.
it wouldn't fire up for an hour or so as i fiddled with it, read some vida codes
it showed 15 codes, i suspect they were legacy old codes so i erased all and cleared it out.
in unselected CSC i get CEM 1A62 , COMM BETWEEN ECM AND CEM MISSING.
but in delivery after erasing codes its not there.SO I'm considering this might be another old fault code.
does anyone know whats the distinction between unselected csc and delivery.
car started, seems kinda normal but i have a persistent ECM 2000 coolant temp sensor low. the engine fan is running with cold engine.
i replaced this sensor 3 weeks ago but still get coolant temperature too low, probably because the fan runs constantly.
so i plugged the old ect sensor in and ... the fan doesn't run.
plugged the new sensor in and the stupid fan runs.
i did it several times and its consistent.
It looks like this ect sensor is a dud. I looked at my FCP account, didn't get it from them.
I might have ordered it on ebay, duh.
Anyway, will this ECT sensor prevent starting ?
I have to go 200 miles Monday morning, I'll carry the old sensor and some tools in case.

A bad ECT will cause starting issues. It measured as you know the coolant temp and along with the outside temp sensor acts as a kind of old style choke. If the signal is bad or out of spec the car may not 'choke' the engine for cold starts and it will run rough. It may improve if you can get the engine warm.

Only use Volvo ECT if you want a good part. Aftermarket are a crap shoot as you have discovered.

I have one from ebay. Paid extra to have OEM one, got a generic. Ended up reimbursing the purchase and doing surgery on my old ECT sensor.
Bosch ME is super-picky about the sensors.

Is this a good preventative maintenance piece to install at 140k-ish? That and the fuel pump relay I keep reading about?
(I'm still figuring out how to change the points on this car...where are they?!...)

On later models with ME 7 Ive only replaced one ECT on these cars for failure, over maybe 500,000 miles driven

So far I have not had to swap one that I recall. They tend to slowly peg out as they age as the wire resistances change. Testing it is probably the best way to go. Not done that on a P2, so not sure how hard it is to access the connector for it. I know the thermostat on 04? - cars is a royal pain.
As for the fuel pump relay, I'm not sure if on your year are you running a PEM rather than the old style fuel pump relay? PEM's do fail, but it is a Ford part number on it so may be cheaper from there. I have several I pulled at the junk yard. They have a variety of date codes on them so I am assuming they do fail. I know they are not cheap to buy!

Eek!!
Having done a quick google on this, your car may not have a PEM. They are chassis number dependent according to IPD website.
