1998 V70 Base - Fuel Tank Vent Hose?

Post by STLV70 »

I identified the culprit of P0455...It appears to be a complete tear through a portion of hose that runs alongside the filler neck. I believe it may be this part: Volvo Fuel Tank Vent Hose - Genuine Volvo 3501350

Can anyone confirm that this is the fuel tank vent hose from the pictures below? The tear is in a hose attached with an oetiker clamp. It is near the fuel filter. It then runs to the back of the car along the fuel filler neck. I have included two pictures, one of the hose next to the fuel filter, and one of the hose from the back of the car, where it runs up along the neck.

Thanks!

Not too critical to use OE part there. Any fuel vapour resistant hose if the right size will work

I'm not sure that is your leak point. That comes off the roll over valve and just runs up to the vent which if I recall is just a filter. I don't think it is a valve in there unless it is a one way valve allowing the system to pull a vacuum. P0455 is a large leak.

Try the hose first then let us know if it fixes the problem please. I may be wrong on this one!

Thanks gentlemen. I’ll report back once I replace the hose.

I feel like I’m at a spot on this car that for every one thing I fix, 4 other things that need fixing become apparent.

That's a good size crack. However, you could duct tape that first and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't keep looking. Removal could potentially create another issue along with the original if there is more to it then that.

I enjoy MVS because of the kind and respectful community that's here. I've learned so much.

You have made it even better by affirming duct tape may be a suitable fix. :D

After more time on my back, and recognizing what a challenge it's going to be to get tape in there, I'm waiting a couple weeks until I get my next parts order in, including a new fuel filter, to address this problem when everything else is loosened up.

I disconnected the battery over the weekend to work on the ECU and SAS delete mod. I've only got 50 or so miles on the car since reconnecting the battery, but the CEL hasn't returned yet. If I remember correctly, the last time I disconnected the battery, the CEL came on immediately for the EVAP leak. Maybe I just had the gas cap on wonky.

Possibly. One thing worth checking is the gas cap and the seal in particular as it does split with age. Also check the top of the fill pipe. I had a friend who had a leak issue and it turned out to be someone must have been rough with a fuel fill and had deformed the top of the fuel filler tube enough to not allow a good seal. We were luck to be able to reshape it sufficiently to fix the issue.

Good Luck!

Sometimes it's a combination of things. I left the oil cap sitting in the engine compartment and drove 15 miles. Use a power washer to clean the oily mess as the spark plug cover was off. You guessed it the car was barely driveable afterwards. Car never ran what I considered perfectly for about a year since purchased.

Long story short the water found hairline cracks on 2 coil bodies and broken neck for the spark plugs. Still another minor issue after replacing all 5 coils. This led to cleaning the ETM. Just enough gunk to make the butterfly less than perfect in responsiveness. Forget what the problem was but it went away.

Since your CEL has not returned after the gas cap tightening, if reachable run a bead/gob of silicone on that crack and let it dry a few hours before using the car. If the problem doesn't come back don't tear into system for awhile unless you need to just in case you wind up creating another issue. In my case discovery of 2  .

An EVAP code can take 100-500 miles to show depending on driving style. Most codes take 50-150 mile cycle to pop.
