Hello everyone regarding my 2007 cross country Volvo wagon XC 70

Post by Iluvvolvos »

I are used to come to this forum, but I’ve had a lot of negative things happening in my life for the past couple of years and a lot of bad things with the car, but I used to post here. Also, please excuse any typos or anything because currently I have to use the voice to text, but I will try my best here.

I found out from Volvo about maybe six months ago that my power steering pump was leaking a little bit of fluid, but I’m able to turn my wheel perfectly with no problems. They also told me that my car was burning quite a bit of oil and leaking a little bit onto the timing belt,

The price they wanted to fix it. I thought it was 2000 but thinking back now. I think it was 4000 and that did not even include the power steering pump that was a new timing belt and that was I guess gaskets and different things. , but they did tell me how I didn’t have to worry about it as long as I kept the car kept checking on my oil it would be OK that it was nothing that I had to work on to get fixed right away because no offense here but I just didn’t have the $4000 literally just didn’t have it just burn a lot of oil every couple weeks I have to put in about half half a quart sometimes a quart but I make sure that I do that.

This Wednesday will be three weeks. I was heading into my doctors office around 30 miles from where I live my car was driving perfectly fine going there and when I left the office I get in the car started and this horrible smell of antifreeze all over the car and then the red light of course came on and then the other light saying not to drive the car because it was low on antifreeze.

So I took it to the mechanic place and they came out and told me that I needed a new radiator and we’re going to charge me a little over 1000 I think 1300 or something.

I wasn’t really comfortable with so I had the car towed back here to my house. I had a mechanic right down the street here. Look at it he didn’t really do anything except just look under the hood and said you probably need a new radiator and new hoses and he was gonna charge me around eight or 900 but I never heard back from him so I started looking online and I found a mobile mechanic and I tell you what this guy is beyond honest he went ahead and ordered the thermostat for me and radiator and the hoses and everything thinking that that’s what had to be fixed. He showed up here this morning , and after looking at the car for quite some time, he said it did not need a radiator. He said the main reason why he knew it didn’t was because he put water into my reservoir and nothing leaked out whatsoever but the antifreeze water.

So he has no idea what’s wrong with the car his worker looked under the car at my turbo and said that it was greasy that it seemed to have oil on it.

I don’t understand how this happened almost 3 weeks ago this week all the antifreeze left in my car and the smell came inside the car but now when water goes into the reservoir, nothing does leak out. Say that I don’t need a radiator. Unbelievable this guy could’ve charged me for those parts that he had here and putting them in and yet he didn’t. He was so honest , I just don’t know what to think. I don’t know. I can’t afford to take it to Volvo. I don’t want to drive that far. Well, I can’t drive it all right now I don’t want to drive it if anybody has any ideas what you think this could be please please let me know. I’m so worried , that is going to be something very expensive

1) Do you see the leak and if so where on the pump?
2) How would they know if it's burning oil and how much is leaking onto the timing belt? Did you see the timing belt?
3) Find the Estimate and provide info on what they found and what they intend to do?
4) Did he show you the crack? If the doctors says he needs to remove a tumor you would want to see the X-Ray?
5) Good that he honestly don't know, which also may means he may not know what he is doing as his diagnostic was just looking for an obvious leak in the tank, which you could have concluded yourself.

Suggest you find a shop with good reviews and ask questions where exactly is the problem and confirm by looking at it yourself. Also, ask what did they do in terms of test to find the problem(s)?
.
Blessings,

new radiater cost me 600 to have installed at the service place,
i damaged that one and bought another from fcp for 250 , did it myself.

turbos often have oil on them. unless its gushing , ignore that.

my power steering has been leaking for 3 years.

timing belt problem is cam seals, 1200 or so.
should use a new timing belt .

its difficult to own a volvo if you cant diy.
if we could afford mechanics this forum wouldnt be here.
do you want to try diy, posting your locatioon helps people to help you.

I used a NRF radiator and it seems alright. However care should be taken when tightening the clamps, the radiator's throat is pure plastic. Over tighten and it will crack.

Thank you so much for the two people here that have replied to me. I really appreciate all the help I can get well. The person came here again today to look at my car again because he feels so bad that he wasn’t able to fix it yesterday and today he filled up my You know the reservoir to the fill line with regular water and nothing came out from the radiator whatsoever so of course he’s thinking that my radiator is OK but then again he doesn’t know Volvo and I don’t know this much about radiator on Volvo. I’m a seven year old female. I have had Volvo’s most all of my life, but I’ve never done any work on them myself so this is really hard . He’s trying to troubleshoot what it could be. Does anybody here know what could be happening to my car and what is the best way to troubleshoot it?

I mean if he’s putting water into the reservoir and it’s staying at the fill line now and it’s not leaking out of the radiator then that would mean that I don’t have the bad radiator right I’m just so thoroughly confused. None of this is making any sense the other day like I said he ordered a brand new radiator for me not a Volvo cause I can’t afford it now but the radiator and the houses and the antifreeze and he also ordered a new thermostat, but he thought that I needed all of that going by what I had told him that I had thought I needed a new radiator that’s why he’s back today Out of the goodness of his heart to find out exactly what’s wrong with my car obviously something is wrong that made it in the first place is there another way to troubleshoot a bad radio radiator with a Volvo and again mine is a 2007 cross country XC 70 and it’s an automatic all-wheel-drive and it is a turbo but the shop that I was at in Springfield Missouri was going to charge me for putting in a new radiator. They said that’s what I needed, but this man cannot find the radiator to be leaking at all.

All cooling systems functions the same regardless of Make or Model. You can search Youtube for other videos on how the system works. Unless you know how the system works and how testing is done it won't help when others explain it to you. If you can understand the basics you'll be able to tell if the person working on the cars knows what they are doing.

Know what I was kind of asking was you know he’s done? I don’t know about everything but quite a few things to see if it is the radiator or not and the radiator itself is not leaking so he’s not sure what it is. I was just asking if anybody else with this year, making model You know maybe had any advice or opinions or anything that’s all I was trying to say because he is trying to find out what’s wrong by trying different things and so far it’s coming out that the radiator is not broken but yet three weeks ago supposedly it was which is not making any sense , that’s why I was asking how you guys would check to see if your radiator was broken or not besides putting water into your reservoir what other way would you check Volvo of this? ?

Watch the very simple and helpful video as it applies to all cooling systems including Volvo. It will help you to know what the person working on your car is doing besides helping you to ask pertinent questions in order for anyone here to provide an accurate response.

Here's the Youtube title since the link above in my post didn't work for you.

Pressure Testing Cooling Systems - EricTheCarGuy.

I'll see if I can find another similar video after I'm done watching videos about Troller Fishing.
