2008 XC70: Oil Leak (decoupler seal?) and squishy hose

Post by mtd240 »

Back working on my father's 2008 XC70 3.2L, 110k miles.

After having replaced the drive belt, tensioner, idler pulley, decoupler pulley, PS pump, water pump, and radiator, I think I might have to go back in and replace the decoupler seal. There is oil behind the idler puller and tensioner, and all over the bottom of the engine (where trans/engine mate). Not the vacuum pump seal/s -- totally dry there.

Additionally, a hose connected to a hard coolant pipe on the oil pan (#16 in the diagram here), PN 30774513 (or LR005564), is very squishy and thin and has clearly started to leak a little based on the residue on the connected hard pipe.

My questions for the forum experts:
  1. Before I commit -- are there any other common/known leak points on that side of the engine aside from the decoupler seal?
  2. Are there any other parts I should replace while I have all this mess apart again?
  3. Will removal of the A/C compressor bracket be sufficient to access the hose connections, or will I need to do more? I've seen some other threads (e.g.Swedespeed ), but honestly they don't have a clear "this is the right way to do this".
  4. Last time I pulled the A/C bracket, I did not use the special tool (999-7262) to re-align it on install. Should I have? Is there a cheaper way to ensure things go back together right?
  5. Any experience with the Elring decoupler seal? I wish FCP would ship the OEM Volvo seal with the install tool -- that's the only reason I want to go aftermarket.
As always, thanks for the help.

Instead of getting this part in a Volvo Box I recommend that you look at the Land Rover Part. The only difference is the packaging.

Here is what I did to make sure that it went back to the same location.

Replaced the seal (new pictured) and hose (old pictured) yesterday. All is well, I think, on to the next task! Thanks Paul for the comments — I used your approach to realigning the AC bracket (paint pen).

Parts:
Elring decoupler seal (came with tool that worked great)
LR005564 Coolant hose (see link in original post)
Gallon or so of antifreeze

About 3.5 hrs including cleanup

Question: any idea what this is? Found it under where I worked on the car. Hopefully nothing essential!

It isn't something that I've seen before.

Good Luck
