Hi, i'm having some problems with my ride (1994 850 turbo), and before getting it to the garage to fix it i wanted to see if any 1 has had the same problems and if so what they did to take care of it.
1. Weird whistling noise when engine reaches 2000rpm at start in cold weather. Noise seems to be getting worse.
2. Cruise control not working....could it be a fuse???
3.Whippers for low beam work, but wont squirt whipper fluid...!
Besides that the car runs fine and fasttt, any help will be appreciated,
Thanks
Mat
Weird noises and other annoying problems... Topic is solved

for no. 1 a leaking exhaust manifold can cause that, once the engine warms up the sound goes away....or could be other reasons....dunno its always hard to diagnose over the internet....could be the air pump etc etc.
where is the sound coming from?
where is the sound coming from?

Hi, thanks for your response, the noise does seems to go away when the engine gets warm. I had my friend push the gas pedal while i was in front of car with hood opened, the noise seems to come from the left of the engine (not the side of air filter). And, is an exhaust manifold expensive to change? The car has 210k on it, driven by my dad (sunday driver) and has never seen winter, this is the 1st winter fior the car, i moved up north....digital2 wrote:for no. 1 a leaking exhaust manifold can cause that, once the engine warms up the sound goes away....or could be other reasons....dunno its always hard to diagnose over the internet....could be the air pump etc etc.

oops if it is coming from where i think it is...
it could jolly well be preliminary bearing failure in the waterpump. I got a whistling sound before which became better on warm up. and it was preliminary water pump failure.
or turbo problem.....
do an oil change...and find out what is the old oil, is it synthetic or mineral use back the same. DO NOT CHANGE otherwise u may get rear main seal failure which costs USD1000 to do right.
BETTER get a free diagnosis if u can get it. some shops do give free diagnosis.
OTHERWISE u may end up with a wrecked car if it is the water pump or wrecked turbo due to poor oil flow.
Try to use a hose to locate the noise. one end to ear and move the other end over the engine until u get the noise.
This sounds dangerous. The cruise control is nice but not critical.
common failures for cruise control is
rubber elbows under battery tray
rubber elbows under the dash
cracked nylon piping near radiator
cruise control module
if exhaust manifold cracked could be expensive but generally it is the gasket leakage (no idea on price, u gotta check it yourself.
the headlamp wiper fluid thing is normally due to the check valve clogged which costs a few dollars very affordable. sometimes (rarely) pump failure.

i forgot to mention, since its only between 1500 and 2000 rpm, how could it be the water pump??? and if the manifold is leaking....would i notice a loss in power???

I never found out. It's rare now. A couple years and it's worked it's way out of the system. I owe the car a timing belt change -- I'm at 70.5k -- so I never did rule the tb shroud out.
But when I do hear it, it's the same old characteristics -- fall or winter temperatures, early in the warmup period (i.e. car's cold), somewhat related to RPM, right front engine area. Not speed related, just kindof RPM related in that it gets higher pitched with greater RPMs. Never lasts more than 3 minutes.
