1998 Volvo V70

Performing a smoke test

After fixing a couple broken hoses by fuel pump this is the next place smoke comes out.

Should it?

Should there be a cap on this or a hose attached?

Simple answer is yes it should. That open pipe should connect to the evap valve under the rear of the fender:

1) For EVAP testing I plugged it and now smoke moved to the top of tank so that's the next adventure

2) Thanks for your heads up. After thinking I had nothing there, I looked deeper and found the hose, cracked. This post was also helpful https://volvo850wagon.wordpress.com/201 ... eak-p0455/

There is nothing in that vicinity or at the back of my fender.

this post has a similar diagram to the one you linked and it shows an alternate U hose (#16) that doesn't attach to anything and in the diagram you liked it is the hose #20 that attaches to #18 Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid

If #16 is part 9443308, that failed on my 2000 S70 at the connection and I was getting an EVAP code. I just sealed the crack with RTV.

Wrapping this topic up

So my hose was short and cracked at the end. I cut back to good hose. Then I cut off a couple inches to attach to the canister and I spliced in a hard or plastic tube as an extension. So far so good.

Also learned about the valve at the end of this hose and researching on here that it's normal for it to be open to the atmosphere. So for evap smoke and pressure testing I plugged the exit from the canister and it held up to 5 PSI no issue
