Hi Guys.
welp a few hours after getting my dream volvo...
i may have ruined my message display.
its a project volvo and of course the battery was dead...
the messages display is largely blank but sometimes its scrambled pixels
this happened after a dead battery and i tried to jump the battery with a starter pack connected to the battery.
im hoping i didnt accidently fry it somehow.
any ideas of how to restore it

The driver information module (DIM) has had a history of cold solder joint issues with the use of no-lead solder, this was mostly on the early model year vehicles and pretty much got sorted out in the latter model years. One of the symptoms was a wonky clock that got worse over time and an info screen that had some visual errors. Reports of issue being thermal related, I experienced a 2003 S80 DIM flat out completely die. I was able to get the DIM back online by removing then reapplying (reflowing) solder on a bunch of the chips (I have experience in this area) but eventually it required a "new" cloned DIM.
Being an '06, it's statistically small in my mind that this is your exact issue but it's still a logical possibility. The information center window garbling is a good indicator of an internal issue (assuming rest of DIM works correctly?).

Hi,
While anything is possible, I don't think that it is related to a dead battery event. As mentioned above, this is likely tied to a bad solder joint in the DIM/LCD area.
If you're handy and patient, get a DIM from a boneyard (many Volvo models will do), extract the LCD and replace it in your current DIM. This way, no need to pay for DIM cloning (which would be needed to transfer the mileage).
You will need to disconnect your battery before removing the DIM and there is a procedure that you should be aware of to avoid damage and/or triggering DTCs.
Good luck.

I and MVS member "ignatz" and perhaps others have used European Electric and would recommend the service. My friend repaired the DIM in our 03 S80 T6. I thought it would similar to the 2 ABS Modules I repaired so decided to give the 02 V70 XC DIM a try. Big mistake, should have left it for my friend. I winded up heavily damaging the traces on the board of the 02 V70 XC's DIM.
Dave at European Electric went above and beyond to try and fix the damaged traces and was partially successful. The odometer and message center fully functions. The clock, trip odometer and other message center values, due to the damage always defaults to when I damaged it. It can be reset however so still available if needed. Don't try to repair it yourself unless you are an electronics whiz like my friend.
