When I bought my 2006 XC70 a year ago, the owner only had one key, a switchblade key remote. I noticed early on that I had to replace the fob battery more than I expected, but over the course of the year, the remote has just stopped working altogether. I've been using the physical key to unlock and lock the car, there doesn't seem to be an issue with the locks at all, but I'm trying to slowly restore functionality to the car (don't get me started on the aftermarket head unit replacement someone did on this without thinking about the backup sensors).
Where do I start to try figuring out what part of this isn't working? Is there a need in this bughunt for VIDA? I'd like to avoid a trip to the dealer, they quoted $750 for a second key and that's when the original fob was working. For a 20 year old car (albeit one I'm trying to care for), that's steep.
(Apologies if opening a new thread is considered bad etiquette, I wasn't finding any that closely fit this issue)
Key remote stopped working - How to determine the cause?

I should add I've tried a few remedies suggested online: replacing fob battery, resetting the UEM, charging the car's battery. I am wondering if heat is a factor since this seemed to come up as the weather changed, and the previous owner kept the car in a tree-covered area while I'm usually parked in direct sunlight.
