Why must the subframe be lowered to remove steering rack? [S60 2005]

My steering rack on my NA S60 2005 (non-speed sensitive) has developed a very serious leak, resulting in puddles for even just 5 minutes. Last time I had the pump starved for a few miles before I could safely stop to refill.

My investigation has led me to believe, the leak is from the input shaft seal same as here viewtopic.php?t=97031.

Now, I would like to ask members on WHY the subframe needs to be dropped, which part specifically is obstructing removal?

it depends whether you have awd or front wheel,

this guy has fwd , did not drop the subframe.

He only replaced a pipe though, not the entire rack and he is awd.

I replaced the pressure hose on my S60 FWD. Worst job I've ever done. There is no clearance for a 4" box wrench let along a full rack to come out. A good job to subcontract to your best local indie.
