2005 ( corrected from '95 ) v70 fuel Pump replacement

Post by Faust »

I am posting this out of frustration and as a warning to other V70 owners. I am now in my eighth day (two hour days) of attempting to replace the fuel pump in my '05 V70, the metal tank version. This is certainly the worst Volvo problem I have ever had. As soon as I saw all of those plastic connectors that Volvos loves, I should have buttoned it up, put the seats back in and found someone else to do it. Recommendations if you attempt this, all of the long needle nose pliers you can find and a light source safe with gasoline it actually has to go in the tank. Once you put your hand into the tank there is no sight line possible, so everything is by feel; that is where the long nose long needle pliers come in. I am about to solder wire I had to cut because the connector clip failed. I am wondering if that was the whole problem, and I could have left the old pump in. I have watched all of the YouTube videos and they make it appear simple, but I note they skip right over the problem areas I have encountered. Simple "Installation is the reverse of removal" Best of luck.

I wonder that if I had all of the long nose pliers and fiber optic light I might not be further along. Of course, there is all that plastic that fails.

Well, my two hours for today are up. Most of the time was consumed in creating a tool to reinstall a little red flapper valve that somehow came loose. The main problem continues to be the "clip" which attaches the ground wire to the pump motor. No matter what I do it manages to come free, since that area cannot be seen when the pump is installed it means partial removal. Whereupon it unclips itself. When removing the old "bad" fuel pump I noticed that this wire was loose from the pump. I have wondered if that was whole problem. I have replaced the clip with another, no improvement. Just a design which might have looked good on paper.

OK 10 days into this job. I believe I have correctly installed the pump but without use of the front clamp, this is suggested in one of the YouTube videos. The front clamp being too difficult. However, no pumping action from a known good pump. So, I am attempting to check electrical connections without a wiring diagram. There are a number of wires going to the pump can anyone tell me the color of the power wire.
