Head removal - stuck - 2004 xc70 2.5t

Post by beewstew »

I'm working on an 04 xc70, head gasket replacement. I have the intake manifold and related stuff off the front of the engine. I'm stuck on the exhaust side. Flexible exhaust down pipe is off, but I've only been able to remove 3 of the 4x13mm nuts holding the turbo on to the exhaust manifold. The last nut (lower driver side) is hard to access.

I was thinking I needed to detach the turbo to get the head out of the car - is this the case? I've disconnected the two obvious coolant lines on the turbo and one oil line - not sure where the second oil line is for the turbo... Should I just pop the valve cover bolts and hope for the best?

Resolved: the 4th nut was impossible to loosen. I left the turbo+ex manifold in place. didn't replace the gasket between ex. manifold and turbo.

The head is heavy, I am sure it's possible but unless you have strong hands I'd make it as light as possible

the oil return line is under the turbo, it drains straight down to the lower engine block. you can pull the turbo front half out without removing the oil drain pipe. the bottom of the oil drain is just an O ring...no bolts.
if you remove the band clamp and split the turbo mark the 2 halves with a punch to make sure they go back in the correct position.

Turbo removal is not necessary, just undo the manifold.

Use gasket's cardboard to protect it while jiggling the repaired head around.

As coolant will inevitably enter in some amounts into the cylinders, do try your best do soak it up, or else you will get this after a while(well a particularly long time)
