Install new hood release cable

Hello Volvo people!
My first post involves opening the Volvo hood. The photo imbedding is not evident so I link my activities

I have removed a rusted hood release cable, and put a new Volvo cable in. The primary latch on passenger side has such a narrow slot on the bottom plastic piece I can’t imagine a way to get the new cable in there. I thought the old one was rusted in and decided to cut it off and twist out the stuck sheathing.
Is there a method or tool that gets the cable in the plastic groove inside the bottom of the latch? I can use force and screwdrivers but it appears that something will break
