Electrical Mystery, Ignition Switch '05, V70 n/a

Post by Faust »

For those who follow my posts you may recall that it just took me 2.5 weeks to replace my fuel pump. It still didn't work, and neither did anything else electrical, so in reliance on a reply to an earlier post, I replaced the ignition switch. After that, aside from starting, a number of things improved. For example, I had lost my message box several months ago, with the new switch that came back to life. My check engine light seems to have disappeared. Well, AAA brought me home again today after car just quit on me. I can find power going to the pump (that may be power before the PCM), but my message box has once again disappeared, So, having one on hand, tomorrow I will replace the ignition switch and see if that is a cure. Assuming it is, does anyone know what could be burning out my ignition switches?

I can't hear the pump run, but that might be me. In college I had to fire the cannon, I am paying for it now.

Just thought I would add, I disconnected the battery for several hours while I put a charger on the battery. May try the recommended "15 minutes" and see what, if any, effect.

Since I regained the DIM with the new switch, I wonder if this is not some explanation of my problem. Since the car died on the road, I notice that the DIM is now gone again.
"I went through something very similar recently with my ‘04 XC70. I don’t know if they’re the same. But it was the DIM (“drivers information module” - or the gauge cluster assembly). The lead-free solder mandated then became brittle and many connections on the circuit board fail through heat or vibration. Many of those systems you mention are wired through that DIM."

These Volvo DIM were designed by some Dim Wits. They affect so many things. Problems I've encounter, seat heater, air bag light, SRS in message center, door locks (entering and exiting), fuel door, entry lighting. Don't attempt a DIY as I damaged mine. Send to Dave like many others here to have it repaired.

Could it be an open in the battery? Recently replaced the 250K OE alternator on the 03 Odyssey. Took a trip and on the final day the van had what seem like a slight slower start. As soon as we got home a couple of days later the van completely died. The battery voltage showed 8 volts. Thought we left something on or the alternator was bad. Removed the battery and charged. The needle pegged full amps. Came back 15 minutes later to check and battery was charging normally and voltage at 12 volts. Decided to check acid and one was low. Long story short the cell with the low fluids had burned out so would be open from time to time. Car had lights and all but would not crank. A new battery and it's back to normal.

I have another Volvo battery kicking around, I thought to switch it. What you mentioned had occurred to me. Don't have anything to test them, so I'll just give it a try and see what happens.

Sounds frustrating! I'm not an expert, but maybe there's a short somewhere that's causing the ignition switches to fail? Just spitballing here

Hi, I have similar issues with a 2002 V70-XC. Were you pleased with the repair? Thanks!

Yes, he does excellent work. As mentioned mine was further damaged by the DIY attempt. In speaking with Dave he thought it would be nice to have a challenge once in awhile as it's such a routine to repair the Volvo DIMS.
