We are a repair shop however do not specialize in Volvo. A customer brought in a 2006 Volvo Xc 90 with an engine that was bad. Car drove ok except for bad engine. We replaced the engine with a good low mile used engine from another xc 90. After repair was complete the car would only stay in any gear for maybe 2-3 minutes and then would go into a fail safe mode, I pulled the lines from the cooler to verify what was happening when it went into this mode of the transmission not moving in any gear and it was simply not pumping any fluid. You turn the key off let it set for 5-10 minutes and then it would go easily back in gear again for another 2-3 minutes or so and then stop again.
After doing this so many times i wasn't sure if we had done damage to the transmission because the fluid looked burnt at this point so we changed out the transmission with a good low mileage transmission from a Volvo xc 90 and again same problem as the original transmission will run for a few minutes and then stop. I know we have installed everything correctly as we change engines and transmissions here daily.

Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated.
Also there has never been any codes in the engine or the transmission.

Please list any and all codes set during the repair work.

Could a MVS member in the area with Volvo software go to the shop and see what engine and transmission extended diagnostics are set?

The only code that was set was in the very beginning for the boost pressure sensor that goes in near the radiator it was not sealing good and we just put a new sensor in and the code never came back. After that there has never been any engine or transmission codes. I am using a good scanner a Matco Maximus 4.0. The engine is a 2.5 L5 vin (59)

I mean considering the issue occurred with two different transmissions(did you change any of the control modules??) I would say the torque converter is not installed correctly or perhaps an electrical issue, missing ground?

I was thinking earlier there might be an electrical connector loose. Maybe not seated fully?
Have you removed and reinstalled the TCM connector? There is a special tool to remove the connector. A connector pin might also be bent.
But I am no expert, just making suggestions.

Thanks for the responses. I also thought at first a torque convertor problem as well, however when we replaced the second transmission it came with a different torque convertor and we made sure it was installed correctly.
Now as far as the TCM we did not remove it during the engine or tranny swap, However we have since pulled the connector to verify everything is good with it. My question to is there was a used turbo installed on it before we got it. If that was bad would that cause this problem? and if so i would think it would set a check engine light however i have never had any ECM or TCM codes.
