Few questions: 06 XC70 131,000 miles. Last timing belt change at 74,000. When do I do it next? OIL: I have always used Mobil 1. Is there any reason to change brands at this time ? My mechanic friend suggests Liqui Moly. I am burning oil (losing about 1 qt. per 2000 miles). I fear changing oil brands because it may worsen the situation.
I see that M-1 has 'regular', 'High Milage' and 'Extended'. Any thoughts on changing from 'regular' at 131K? I usually use either 5/30 or 0/40, depending what is available - New York climate.

For the timing belt, what was the date it was last changed, if not by mileage the belt should be changed after 7-8 years, some recommend as long as 10 years but to be on the safe side go for the shorter time frame. This is a thread with the info in it with Volvo information table:
Check the details as there are 2 mileage maximums for the first one depending on the engine code as per several states including CA.
150k miles for what they call PZEV models with specific engine codes (39 and 64) OR 10 years.
For all other cars it is 120k miles for the first and 105 miles after that or every 10 years max. Water pump every 2nd belt.
That is based on you buying the timing belt kit from Volvo which includes the timing belt tensioner and idler pulley.

I like full synthetic high mileage oils. With your oil burning In New York climate I’d run 5w40/0w40 in winter and 10w40 in summer if you can time the oil changes with the seasons. I don’t have a brand preference.

Saw your Facebook post and wondered if rings sticking could be a deal. I’d try a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil for the last 1000 miles of an oil change interval. Also seen some good reviews on Valvoline Restore and Protect but if it looks sludge’y at all under the oil cap I’d only run it a 2000 mile oil change. You might find that helps. Running some tanks of Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel (4oz/10gal) for several tanks can help clean up to the top end of the engine too.

Timing belt , yep aged based max 7-8 years . I would also change the waterpomp ( aisin pump!) but others say it wil keep on going ( until you are to late )..
Oil ;
I would use 5w40. Change it every 10-15k km . It is not just the brand but it is what you are using.
I am using motul 5w40. It has the right stuf in it to prevent oil use. Kendall oil would as well a good choice.
What I would do to try lower the oil use..
1. Prepare an oil change by an emptying a bottle 500cc(?) of liquid Moly ( check which one you need) leave it on idle for 20 minutes. The hotter the better.
2. Drain the oil and leave it dripping as long as you can.
3 change filters and fill engine whit a good oil.
4 drive for abouth 2k km but no more then 5k and again use liquid moly, swap filters and no fill the engine with excellence oil like motul or Kendal
5 swap oil every 12k max and use liquid moly before oil change.
Your piston rings will hopefully clean step by step and lower your oil use.
Other option…
Check compression on all cilinders . They must be in line with each other. If 1 or 2 are lower, drop a very small amount of oil on the piston trough the spark plug opening.
Now check the compression again. If compression in the cilinder with the oil went up your piston oil rings are worn..
