1998 V70xc Alternator replacement

Post by fitz548 »

Hello all,

this is my first post in awhile i have a 1998 Volvo v70xc that i take great care of recently a few months ago replacing the radiator that was 7 years old (Nissens unit)/complete timing belt kit including water pump/coolant temperature censor/New thermostat/front and rear cam seals/all pulleys and tentioners also/ entire pcv system serviced all components replaced.

with that out of the way my vehicle runs very well with 254,000 miles on her recently on a small road trip i noticed that the Battery light illuminated on the instrument cluster i kept driving as i was almost back to the house and so i popped the hood and noticed that according the my voltage meter that the battery had 12 volts but the alternator was putting out 10 volts only.

after thinking about this for awhile i thought well i could just replace the brushes? then i thought you know the alternator is 26 years old and i will go ahead and just replace the whole thing. and so i ordered one from IPD in portland and it just came in today.

it is the Bosch ALO752x Re-manufactured 100amp alternator so heres the issue---- the one on the ipd site showed it had no pulley and you just have to re-use your old pulley i thought ok well how hard is it to get this pulley off is it just a matter of using an impact to remove the nut and the pulley comes off freely?or do you need some sort of puller?

I had also read and article where a guy had a 1998 v70 and got an alternator from fcp and he didnt worry about changing out the pulley because it looked the same however when he got it all back together the belt kept coming off the pulley and the guy said he thought the pulleys were the same however the new pulley was off by 3/16 of an inch and he then had to remove everything and do it all over again and remove his old pulley off and switch them out.

Just looking for yalls thoughts on this thanks alot.

Take a piece of string or bendy wire and run it around the inner lowest point of the pulley to get the circumference and compare with the original and see if they are the same.

I am surprised that the Bosch re-man unit could come without the pulley. If it does that is a new thing as the ones I have bought all came with the pulley installed. Some brands do not come with a pulley at all and you have to transfer the pulley from your old one.

Grab the pulley with a gloved hand, hit it with the impact.

good idea i will do that i really don't want to take any chances of the belt flying off the pulley thats installed on the new alternator because of the horror stories i have been reading about people just going with the pulley that came on the new alt.instead of switching it out.

I would like to report that i did buzz the nut off the new alternator and the pulley was identical to the stock pulley there were no shims in either one of them so i put the new pulley back on the new alt and went to re-install everything it was not that big of a job but there was one bolt thats on the bottom it connects through the alternator on the bottom and connects to the main bracket that was hard to get out. when i put the new one back in all the bolts lined up easily i am waiting on fcp to send me an idler pulley and tentioner pulley.

That one bolt on the back of the alternator is or can be a bit of a devil to align. Well done!

Much easier on the *sneer* 99 design. Those alternator pulley nuts can be really stuck, and I believe got to left hand thread on the 99 , too
