02 engine swap issues

Post by mudpie »

I'm helping a friend replace a bad engine in his "02 V70XC. All my experience is with '98 and older models. I didn't know why the 02 had a one year only engine, and this is my current understanding....02 was the first year of variable valve timing, but it was only on the exhaust cam. 03 and later had it on both cams, and 01 and older didn't have it at all, It took a while to track down a wrecking yard that had a motor, but we got one they say will work, and it's got the VVT on the exhaust only side.

I noticed though that the thermostat housings are different. The replacement motor has the housing bolted to the block, like I'm used to with my '98, and the engine in the car has a housing that is angled, and the base of the housing seems to be cast into the head. I'll try and attach pics.

I'm out of my element. Are these just minor production variations of the 02 engine or does this represent a substantial difference? Will this engine with the bolt on housing work the same in terms of attaching sensors and hoses, just at different angles? Are there differences within the 02 year such that I have to get an engine out of a specific model, like maybe a V70 motor would work but a C70 wouldn't, or something like that?

Any input appreciated.

The 01/02 as I recall are 2.4l motors and the 03- are 2.5l motors. That thermostat housing looks like a P80 one and not the P2 one. I guess there was a progression of changes over the years.

The single CVVT solenoid is typical until 03. Exhaust on turbo engines and inlet on NA.

Good luck!
