Parting out cars online etc or just send them to the junkyard?

Post by coop »

I’ve got one Volvo ready to go to the scrap yard and another almost there. The junkyards around here will pay somewhere between $200-300 per car.

So makes me wonder if it’s worth pulling certain parts and selling them to make more then $200 off each one then at least get $50 for the rest of it as scrap.

what are the high value used parts off a 97 850 n/a wagon and a 98 s70 t5?

Slight side note the wagon was purchased in Europe by some Americans stationed in Germany or something so I know it does have rear heated seats that I guess are pretty uncommon but is anyone actually looking for a set?

Key question is what your time is worth. Removing and possibly preparing for/arranging shipping will take some time. Also, finding a real buyer with money can take weeks or months.
Scrap yard money is fast and relatively easy. And their money is good with no nonsense.

I just didn’t know if there’s any valuable parts besides what I’ve already pulled from a junkyard.

Abs controller. Fuel pump relay. HVAC motors.
That’s almost the price I’ll get for the car so it’s worth it for things like that.

I replaced the started and pnp switch so I’m pulling those out before I junk the car too.

Starter
Alternator
Power steering pump
Ac compressor

Coupling between steering rack and wheel, if it isn’t a fight.

There are tons of $10 +10 shipping market value parts but the cost of customer acquisition and handling wipes you out.

My rule on parting out is I have to recover the cost of car, towing to/from in the first month, then I strip and box the small stuff , then the car is out.

You can kind of do both. Around here they will give you the same money for the car, whether it's missing parts or not. Doesn't even matter if if has wheels. Before I decided to keep the $100 V70, I was going to pull the rear tail lights, wheels, and the flip down dog divider that I hadn't seen before, and then scrap the car.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

Do the heated rear seats work? They are almost mythical in existence and one of Abscate's on going jokes about their existence.

What color are they and are they in good condition?

The issue with them is what else is needed to get them installed?

As mentioned, weighing up the effort to remove the seats (bases are easy on a wagon), v's the potential value of a sale.

Maybe post pictures in a separate thread here to gauge interest before pulling them.

What's already mentioned - although if the fuel pump relays are original to the cars, save them as emergency backup for your own ride; they have no value in the marketplace.
ETM and the ECM on the T5, MAF, you already mentioned the blend door motors but the control modules are items of interest, blower motor and the resistor, turn signal/cruise stalk, switchgear - especially the headlight switch.
Wiper arms - the 70 series passenger side is a good repair for drivers side 850.
Turn signal/corner light assemblies if the tabs aren't broken. T5 headlights if the reflectors aren't already toast.
The engine oil cooler delete plate is a hot item, still available from Volvo but highly sought after. Use a nice fresh Torx bit for that.
All pretty small stuff easily stored to wait patiently for new homes.
