Questions before buying a new ETM - 2001 S80

Post by Crille »

Hi,
I bought an S80 in really good condition from 2001, one owner for all this time, pretty low milage and with zero rust and in an all around really good condition. The recent things done to it, services, winter tires, timing belt and water pump etc etc all amounted to as much as I payed for the car.
I knew before purchasing it that there was a problem with the throttle body, I did a quick google search to just get an idea of the price for a new one, some of those first results were pretty cheap so didn't think much of it. Maybe it's even fixable without replacing anything i thought.
It's such a nice car for a cheap price that I just couldn't pass on it, and if this is the only little problem I'll learn more about it after buying it.

Well I've been researching and found out about the Magneti Marelli problems and that I have it, I found a kit with a new contactless sensor and a nice guide so I went ahead and bought it.
I completed the sensor installation and tested it by plugging it in, but it was completely dead. I was scratching my head and couldn't think of what I had done wrong.
Found more info on forums that the wiring harness, or the female connector could be a problem. I started to look for wiring diagrams and removed the ECU to see if maybe I could test the wires for Continuity with my multimeter. I couldn't really find an issue.

After a while I realized that I had completely missed the part where I could adjust the magnet on my new sensor, and as I measured it turns out that I only had 1.1V. After adjusting I had 1.45V.
Tested it in my car and IT WORKED!! I ran an ETM Test in VIDA and if I recall correctly it showed something like 1.5 degrees difference.
I thought at this point that it's done and I can now reinstall everything and test it.

But after the first test I still saw some error codes like ECM-9150 and after clearing them it would come back. The ETM tests would also give me a difference of like around 78 degrees.
I removed the new sensor several times, I adjusted the magnet again and go it to exactly 1.4V, I bench measured everything connected to a battery again but nothing made a difference.

I was out of ideas and as I was looking around I found this thread: viewtopic.php?t=38504&start=300
Where the user precopster says that:
Sometimes the board receives input from 2 very good contact sensors (or a Sacer Hall sensor) yet fails to process one of the signals into a definable throttle angle. In this case it will report 108 degrees on the faulty side. This is view-able in Vida under throttle Position sensor 1 and throttle position sensor 2 in ECM-Parameters.

Many throttles have a failing driver on the processing board that is fine when cold and after a few minutes shuts down. It will often output both sensors fine for a few minutes and then suddenly shut down output from one of the sensors. It will then give either a ECM-9150 or ECM-9160 code.

All the more reason the Sacer sensor repair is becoming almost useless as the throttles age and other problems in them surface. Best to check the throttle angles both at cold and after 10-15 minutes of engine running with Vida to ensure that the throttle is processing both TP 1 and 2 sensors. A generic scanner won't show both TPS positions.
and this:
If throttle angles read 108 degrees the ETM is a brick, go build a house with it!!

Get another!!
This is when I saw in my VIDA ETM Test that one of the sensors isn't moving at all, and that's obviously what's creating the big difference. I just had not noticed before that the value wasn't changing at all.
It's not at 108 degrees though, it's at around 95.

What do you say, do you think there's nothing that I can do? Should I just buy a new one, or well, used one would also work of course. I just have to be sure to not buy the same thing again.

Right now I'm not sure what the product numbers are for the ETM that would fit my car, or from what years and types of vehicles that would fit my car.
are there cheaper aftermarket alternatives as well? It's also the question about software I've seen asked, maybe it will have to be adjusted to match somehow at Volvo. From what I could see in Vida I should have the newest version on everything for this old car.

A lot of text, sorry about that, I've just been spending so much time the past two evenings trying to fix this and I'm out of ideas now.

Thank you so much in advance!

Edit: an update, Okay one of the sensors does in fact show 108 degrees when I look at the parameters section, it's just that in the ETM test it shows up as 95.
I also looked through some pictures in my phone from last weekend, before I received the contactless sensor kit, and an ETM test I did showed the same stuck sensor like now.
I guess it's been faulty all along and if it is as he says then I should just replace the whole unit. I'll try to buy one from the scrap yard and put the contactless sensor on that instead I guess.
