Timing Belt Job
While I’m doing the cam seals I intended to install a new timing belt and accessory belt just do to chronological age, 11 yrs. The timing belt job February 2014 used a Genuine Volvo Timing Belt kit with Aisin water pump. Since that time the car has 45k miles. So the belts have timed out but I plan on leaving the pump, tensioner, and idler figuring they’ll easily last another of our TB intervals. 10 yrs from now when I install the next timing belt I’ll consider replacing them as is recommended for the pump and l wondered what others thoughts leaving the tensioner and idler. Fine idea or more risk than it’s worth to save $175.

May depend on how many miles you plan to do the next 10 years?

Water pump will likely be fine, and will ( usually ) give a few hints that things aren't well. The tensioner pulley bearings and the idler can fail without warning, so that may not be a good bet to make.

Our yearly average miles has been ~4k. So if I honor the deterioration of rubber mantra and replace the belt in 7years rather than 11 next time the belt would have 28k and the pump and pulleys will have 69k miles on them. In theory I could leave that pump on for another 20 yrs. I suppose those pulley bearing are sealed and the seals go over time so the extra $150 every 7-11 years is cheap insurance. And I may sell the Sierra Mt McKinley and make the V70 my daily driver.

I had my mechanic buddy come over last year and swap the timing belt on the V70R. The car has only done about 10k miles since the last belt, pump and pulleys 10 years previously. Those were all blue box parts fitted by Volvo dealer. I think these parts may well last a lot longer. The only concern I have is that as the car sits for long periods over the winter here, the belt may get memory issues in the rubber and the bearings may get strained by sitting in the same spot for extended times with tension on them.
I think the wheel bearing issue last year may be a symptom of this laying around and lack of use. It is a tricky decision to make.
Neil.

Intake seal was out. Exhaust looked to be moved a bit.
Oil pump was ready to start leaking very soon.
Lotta cleaning done first.
Back together. Did the tensioner and idler for good measure. Sitting for 11 yrs under tension running or not. No worries for 100k or 7, 8, 10 yrs? Cheap enough insurance. Oil pumps seals and FM seal off the worry list for a bit as well. I had the seals so $305 for parts.
