FWD rear suspension bushing replacement 1999 V70 9181013, 9181027
I need to replace badly deteriorated delta link bushings. Volvo part nos. 9181013 and 9181027. I see FCP offers a genuine Volvo 9181013 for $100, no bolts. The right side 9181027 appears to be unavailable anywhere online. I will keep searching. If it comes to it, what is the consensus on the best alternative aftermarket brand. Or does anyone know the OE manufacturer and do they have a placement on the market? Robert pointed out the Meyle seemed to have a wimpier bushing than the OE “anchorage” he was replacing. All the aftermarket stuff FCP is offering is considerably less expensive than the OE Volvo..no surprise, but I’d rather pay for known quality as the job looks to be a PITA and I’d rather not do it again in 25k or even 50k mikes. Most of what I find to read here is rather old or doesn’t mention brands and the trusted parts thread is rather unspecific as to suspension parts, so any advice greatly appreciated.

I'm sure you have checked here. They claim to be able to ship the part in 1.5 weeks. Not convinced:

I would look to see if you can find any remaining Lemforder parts if you can. They are usually good. Europe may be your only option.

Are the rear suspension parts chiral?
Volvo parts on line shows (6) as same part on each side for both delta links and dead bracket mounts?

Thanks Matthew for fixing my subject line..more significant info is a plus I suppose. And thank you Neil. I went to Pelican and put one of those in my cart and signed up for my 10% discount on my first order but will need to wait until 10:00 EST to call them and confirm it is for real. As to the “chiralousness(?)” of the part, I am mentally referring back to a thread from the early 20-teens where Ozark Lee and madeinjapan were having the discussion and IIRC finally stated they were indeed different.
These are the two lousy photos I took yesterday while on the lift but perhaps we could come to some consensus on the “chirality(better?) of these parts. I’m thinking on quick examination they may be, but why would they be listed so often as different parts. And to add to the vagueness, FCP only has the 9181013 available and Pelican only offers the genuine Volvo 9181027, and only the Meyle or ProParts version of the 9181013.
It would be nice if the were actually the same part. Pelican has them listed for $84 and gave me a 10% coupon. If they have them it’s a nice savings but if they’ve different I can at least get the other at FCP. Lotsa hoping going on here. I will let y’all know what I find out. Let’s here thoughts on the photos. Sorry I didn’t provide better lighting.., stupid.

I have no idea what chirel? means. However, left and right are physically different. As to why many different part numbers I have no idea. There is a company in the UK that lists a bunch of different parts manufacturers for this part, many of which I have never heard of.

They're definitely different parts on each side. I just did this replacement on the 855.
I used the Meyle.

These had just under 50K on them(also the Meyle), but the bushings weren't the issue. The problem stems with the corrosion between the steel bushing shell and the AL housing. The bushings are German, but the unit is assembled in China.
The PS one (in the back) had come apart completely, but the corrosion was still holding the DS one together, even though more than half of the shell had popped off.
If I had thought about it before I buttoned everything back up, I would've put something on there to seal the seam between the housing and the bushing shell to help seal out moisture. That's what causes these to fail.
The job isn't terrible to do.
The Meyle parts come with hardware, but I reuse the over-sized stock nuts instead of what comes in the kit. Before I pull anything apart, I either scribe or spray paint around the upper and lower washer/nut locations. That way I have a reference to get it back to where it was when the new parts are installed. I might need to adjust the toe in a slight bit, but other than that I don't really need to mess with it or take it to a shop to have them screw things up.

Thanks for these photos Chuck. I’m blown away by the engineering at play here and not in a good way. What ever made them think aluminum in direct contact with a chunk of steel, particularly in a likely salty damp environment, was a good idea. First time I’ve seem these things up close in the light and the failure was inevitable. Those steel shelled bushings appear to have been cast into the part and I wonder what sort of coating they attempted to isolate the dissimilar metals. Your idea of somehow trying to seal them with something not corrosive to the rubber(?) bushing is the way to go. Installed could be done with some sort of sprayed product with a certain amount of “creep” factor that would follow itself into crevices . Applied numerous times. I don’t know what that compound would be but we can search around. Galvanic corrosion apparently is the death of these things. Just did a quick check and Fluid Film may be the product that fits the creeping bill. Let’s do some further research.
And Neil, I’ve seen abscate use chiral before and I had to look it up. And I had to look it up again this time….
