No heat after head gasket replacement

Post by beewstew »

Trying to check off problems now that the head gasket replacement is done on my 2004 XC70. I noticed today that the heat doesn't work. Coolant temperature gauge is fine though it's straight up and down after a few minutes of running. No overheating no big coolant leaks. Just no heat with the passenger control turned all the way to hot and the climate control set on auto.

Decades ago I worked on a few Saabs and they would sometimes have air bubbles trapped in high parts of the coolant system that you'd have to bleed out. Is the XC70 similarly primitive? Or, is there some kind of heater core coolant valve that I need to wiggle or check?

Suggestions appreciated.

Has air in the heater core, will bleed in time, but what you should do is run it on full fan and wait till it reaches operating temperature, but use an OBD reader and wait for it to get to 105c, at that time the thermostat is fully open and fluid will circulate, have the cap open just before coolant starts to want to get out. Do it a few times.
