1991 740 GL stalling problem

Post by bjpkzp »

My dads volvo wagon stops running but will start again, although sometimes he has to wait quite awhile. There is no spark when it wont start. My 1987 740 GL had the same (or similar) problem, The distributer had to be replaced, but dads car is newer and has different electrical system. Anyone have any experience with this problem?
Thanks

fuel pump relay. Usually white relay second row behind ashtray. Those are the classic symptoms. Flick it with your finger a few times when problem occurs if car now starts replace relay

If it is the distrubutor you will see the plastic wire holder on back of distrubutor is crapped out you do not have to replace distrubutor you can just replace pickup, but it it a little bit of a job. There is a write up around here somewhere on doing this. Let me see if I can find links.

Bad fuel pump relay will not stop spark! Just the opposite, the fuel pump relay is never activated until after you have spark. All fuel injected cars are built this way for safety.

You say dads car has different ignition system than yours. His hall sensor may be on the flywheel or crankshaft or damper instead of in the distributor, but it's still a sensor problem.
