Code P0172 2014 Volvo XC60 3.2l

Post by Dymond24 »

Hi. I have a 2014 Volvo XC60 3.2 FWD I have the code P0172. I've already replaced the MAF sensor, air filter, replaced the PVC diaphragm valve, and the fuel pressure sensor. And for the life of me cannot get the code off. I'm also having issues when driving. After pulling out of the driveway she takes her time getting up to 30 mph then she studders a bit. But once I get her up and going she stays steady unless I'm going up hill then she struggles to get back up to speed. Any advice?

Tough issue to fix. I think it is best to stop "parts cannon" and bring it to the reputable shop. You tried common issues and they were not the able to fix the issue. Without advanced scanner tool to look at fuel trims and also smoke tester it will be hard to find what's wrong now. You need to know what parameter your temperature sensor showing, long and short term trims, fuel pressure numbers.... if you want to try couple other things: remove injectors and send them for professional cleaning/testing, clean throttle body, change spark plugs, change oil separator. But it all cost money and time. I am afraid you may melt your catalytic and cost yourself a pretty penny. I would pay for either dealer or reputable volvo shop diagnostic 1-2 hours.

P0172 is less common then P0171

P0171 Oxygen Sensor System Too Lean Fault Bank A
P0172 Oxygen Sensor System Too Rich Fault Bank A

You are getting too much fuel as apposed to too much air.

The 3.2 has variable valve lift and if the cam doesn't switch from low to high then the engine will be injecting too much fuel.

Variable Valve Lift (2 solenoids per engine)
LR025967 Land Rover
31216281 Volvo

On my S80 the engine must be raised up and the engine mount bracket removed to access the left sensor

Note: the left and right sensor are the same part so you could just swap them and see if the code returns

Good luck
